OK. I'm fairly new to rod building. I have 7 rods under my belt and I'm looking for something new and the acrylic acetate pen blanks for real inserts have really got my attention.
That being said, I have a few questions:
1) I have a Grizzly mini lathe and drill. Can I even turn the acrylic blanks with the proper tools with this setup?
2) What (inexpensive) tools can I use to drill acryl

I just purchased a St. Croix Avid Blank (6'6" ML Fast) from a dealer. There is a very noticable turn (bend) at the tip (1' from the tip). Should I be concerned and return the blank or is this something common? I've purchased other blanks and haven't noticed this before.
Thanks,
Geoff

Thanks for all the help. I let the epoxy sit for 2+ days and used a rasp for the rough shaping. It worked and looks great!

I attempted to turn my first cork/poker chip grip. The grip is the the butt portion of a split grip. I sanded three chips on both sides with 100 grit and attached to 2 rings of cork on either side using rod bond on a mandrel. I put in a cork clamp and set overnight. The following day I rough shaped using 60 grit, but when I switched to 80 the bond between 2 chips broke. Is this something tha

I've been installing coins in butt caps to fill in the mandrel holes, but I'm wondering if anyone has put a picture cut-out in place instead (meaning I would print out a picture, cut it out, and place overtop of the hole). If anyone has done this, is there a particular way in which they go about the process? I'm assuming I would bore a hole in the butt end, attach picture w/ 2 part epoxy, and t

That's what I've been hearing. I've heard they are manufactured in China and are therefor offered at a lower price. In other words, I was hoping to get the sc2 at a lower price.

Just curious - are the St. Croix Triumph rod blanks available to purchase? If so, who caries them?
Thanks

Thanks guys. One more question though. Do I need to apply CP before the finish epoxy?

Can someone explain the process they use to insert a penny, dime, quarter, or whatever in the butt end of a cork butt grip? I turn my own handles on a mandrel and usually fill the hole with the hole shavings and epoxy.
Thanks in advance.

I am knew to rod building (I've only done 3 so far), and I would like to build a rod for my son. Does anyone know where I can find a blue ultra light/ or light spinning blank? Because this is a childs rod, I don't want to spend mega-bucks. Also for future reference, does anyone offer "custom colors" or at least a wide range of color choices to choose from? I've been to the CTS Rod B

I am a first time rodbuilder and I'm probably going to purchase the Grizzly Hobby lathe and drill for turning cork handles. I'm also looking at purchasing Andy Dears mandrels from the Lamar website, but I don't want to buy all 9 sizes. I will be building mostly light to medium spinning rods with butt diameters ranging from .32" to .50". I would like to get away with purchasing just 2
