This is a formula Cliff Hall put out a year or so ago:
For any given Diameter (D) & any given tape Width (W):
Rise Angle (Alpha)
ALPHA = ARC-SIN [ W / (PI * D) ]
If the blank diameter and the tape width are equal, the rise is approximately 18.6 degrees

Go to the online 2008 catalog. In the website http title, change the '2008' to whatever year you want. It goes back several years. Maybe not as far as you want, but it is a start. How else is there to find out what was in Andy's trash cans?
Edit: Just checked. This works for 2005, 2006, and 2007 only.

Woody, did you grow up across the river from Hickory and is it possible that I was a classmate of your brother and had your mom as an Algebra teacher. Sorry for putting this on the forum but your email was blocked. If so, or even if you are not, sorry I missed you. I am walking out the door right (extremely foggy) now to head to High Point. Unblock your email and I will tell you what you miss

Ron, I like it. How do I size the ferrule? I assume it is the diameter of the female.

Cliff, Never mind. By the time I accounted for all my reciprocals and identities, guess what, your formula is correct. I can't believe I doubted you. Anyway, it is a great tool. I have already made up a table from a .7 ratio to a 1.3 ratio in .05 incriments. Again, sorry I doubted you.

Cliff, Just saw this and really like it. Never thought to use trig to figure the rise. I've got to go to work so I haven't thought it out fully, but for one full wrap (Pi * D) isn't the rise W/COS (ALPHA) instead of simply W; therefore, SIN (ALPHA) COS (ALPHA) = W / PI * D ? Probably an easier way is to make it a function of TAN (ALPHA) and omit the SIN COS. TAN (ALPHA) = W / PI*D ? Gotta

Thanks Raymond,
Nice rod. Thanks for the pics. Did you "beef" up the longer extension by adding a piece of rod blank?

I want to build a combination rod with a detachable 6"-8" butt extension. The extended butt will be used for crappie fishing so strength is really not the main issue. I just want to extend the length of the butt for leverage. My intention is to use one of Batson's 2" fighting butt kits, glue a piece of 6"-8" rod over it and then use a cork grip. Any other ideas?

Maybe that is why "teh" in lieu of "the" is like fingernails on a chalk board to me and why I stop reading a post as soon as I encounter the first "teh".

I too hope a compromise can be reached. For the casual builder/fisherman the combination makes the entry fee insignificant. I honestly don't remember what they were for either of the last two years. It didn't matter. However, I did thoroughly enjoy both the rodbuilding and the flyfishing booths, vendors, and forums. Just my 2 cents.

12. Re: Ferrule
Tom, What are the advantages of an over-sleeve ferrule? Aesthetically, the spigot seems nicer, Also, with the spigot, the scrap blank doesn't need to match the spliced blank. What about filling the ferrule with epoxy to ensure that the spigot does not fail?
Larry, You stated: "you will need to trim back the tip section untill you have about 3/8" of distance between tip and butt a

If I am in the middle of a stream somewhere and want to switch reels, how do I shrink the tube?

Greg, I think Bill was responding to my post and telling me to forego the Tennessee handle and just mount a conventional reel seat. Though he didn't specify whether I should mount it in the rear to work with the fly reel or in the front to work with the spinning reel or just build two rods and configure one as a spinning rod and one as a fly rod.

The point I was making that the only way to obtain these articles is to do it illegally. If the cable company quit taking new applicants and it was the only signal source available, we might be tempted to steal. Tom started a thread several days ago that he was concerned that someone in Kansas had been building rods for quite a while and only dealt through Cabellas and didn't know about either

Mike, My specific problem right now is that I want to make a spigot ferrule. Volume 4, Issue #1 has the information on how to do it. That issue is no longer available. I would gladly pay to obtain a legitimate copy of this article. Since that option is not available, the only way for me presently to gain access to this article is to have someone scan or copy me a bootleg copy. With scanners

I am presently thinking about a combination ultralight spinner/fly rod with a Jann's Netcraft Tennessee handle and graphite rings. The idea of taping at different locations on the handle is not appealing. Also as one who has recovered a dropped fly reel from a stream by retreiving all the line and backing, dropping another reel is not appealing. So what I hear you saying, Stan and Scott, is th

However, for all of us who discovered Rodmaker later on when some of the initial issues were no longer available, it would sure be nice to have a way of accessing them. For example, I want to try a spigot ferrule which I understand is detailed in Volume 4, Issue #1. When I became aware of Rodmaker Magazine, I ordered all the available back copies. Unfortunately, this issue was no longer availa
