I was gone for a few days and reviewing past topics and a question about cutting thin cork rings with a band saw didn't seem to get answered. A method that I use is to pack a number of rings tightly onto a 1/4 wooden dowel and then slice against the fence sort of like slicing meat. It's quick ,even, and with a number of rings on the dowel I can keep even pressure against the fence without fear of

No need to convert back to inches.Just measure down the rod in millimeters or in centimeters which is millimeters divided by ten. Dave

Sixty degrees is pretty cold for consistant curing no matter which product you use. I think I'd consider making a drying box with a light bulb to get the temperature up to 75 or above. That's not too hard and much more cost effective than heating a whole room and drying time is really reduced. An added benefit I've found is less dust or lint collecting on the wraps. Dave

The handle is constructed with female ferrules on each end so that when used in one direction, the fly reel is at the back of the handle, then when the handle is turned around the reel seat is in a forward position such as would be used on a spinning rod. In one case the reel seat is up locking and in the other the seat is down locking. Guides in any spinning configuration that you prefer will a

It seems that most of the really good cork goes to high end "off the rack rod makers". Actually I've seen cheap rods in Walmart that have better cork than I can seem to buy. Dave

Jason, Threadmaster light is the only finish that I've used that doesn't seem to need any heat at all. I generally warm the bottles of finish 6-7seconds in the micowave individually. Lots of times bubbles are drawn into the finish with the syringes when drawing out of the bottle. The technique described by others here of leaving the syringes in the bottle caps really helps in that department.

I have found quite a number of different cord sizes and colors at Hobby Lobby stores. Micheals stores probably have them as well. They have nylon cords that seem to be the perfect sizes and colors for rod handles. Hope this helps Dave

I have been making these rods for some time using 5 piece 7ft.4 wgt travel fly blanks and they make great light spin and fly rods. I use male /female ferrules on each end of the handle but it would not be difficult with spigot ferrules. Go to the archives on how to make them. It's a very old idea but makes a lot of sense for a packable travel rod that can be used from trout to panfish and sma

Mike, It makes no difference. Millimeters is easier to work with because you don't have to deal with fractions of an inch.

I agree with all that was said and I guess that my main point is that we probably process several sources of information when our brain determines what is interpreted as a bite and that the difference between cork and wood would not be a big consideration for a grip material as long as it meets other criteria. Thanks for al of the good input !! Dave

An earlier post was wondering if wood would be more sensitive than cork on a rod. In my case while fishing walleye I find that sight along with feel and the combination of both results in what I detect as a "bite". Quite often my eye detects rod tip movement signaling a bite probably a microsecond before my hand feels it. As far as I'm concerned, the feel that one gets through the ro

There is an easierway. Those sprays that are used to keep frost off windshields work great to prevent ice buildup on guides. Dave

A strong fish on a short braided line can break a rod of any type if the reel drag is improperly set or the fish not played properly because there is no stretch in the braided line. Poor technique is sometimes masked with the monos that have stretch. Dave

Most good hardware stores or especially farm and home stores will have O-rings of that size that can be bought on an individual basis. Hope you have something like that in your area. Dave

I bought a saw of the type that I would call a back saw style from a hobby store that has 24teeth per inch and cuts rings very nicely with very little kerf. It has enough back bone to stay very straight. so, a good hobby store may be a source for a saw that you want.I'm sorry I can't remember the brand name. Dave

One method is to pick a letter type from a printmaster program, transfer it to graph paper and make your left list from it.The other method may be to spend money for a weave program that I'm sure has all of the fonts you want. Dave

The guide rings are probably not agate ,but red glass. The guides are very small double foot brass framed that probably were chromed at one time. Hope this helps. Dave

Josh, The jaws fit on a circular track. After taking the screws out and putting some penetrating oil under the base of the jaws for a few minutes I would give the jaws a light tap on the side with a small punch or nail set and light hammer. that should loosen them.
