Guys, a buddy of mine wants me to install a longer and removable fighting butt on his factory Winston 10 1/2 ft. 7wt. fly rod. The plan is to convert it to a spey rod or what they call a switch rod. My question is in removing the existing butt section without damaging the reel seat or the rod. What is the best way to go about this? i have built and repaired alot of rods over the last 30 years b

Ran into the same problem with a Payne graphite blank. What I ended up doing was wrapping that section with some silk thread, put a finish on it. Turned out to be a good looking fix.

I have an old Fenwick Steelhead rod. Think it is A 1020 or 1021 graphite. The guides and butt wrap were sealed with old style rod varnish, this was done in the late 70's. Any recommendation of how to safely remove this finish without damaging the finish on the blank ? The rod is in great condition but I want to put new lighte weight guides on it.
Thanks
