I flex coat every rod I build, and 90% of the rods I've seen are completely flexed, most of what I build are heavier class boat rods, shark rods etc.

As much as I enjoy building with a brand new blank there is something so rewarding when a customer picks up their freshly redone rod and almost doesn't believe it's the same rod. With that said, maybe you can hit up a flea market, pawn shop and/or garage sales to find some older rods in need of some to to redo before trying it on some that your cherish.

Just read someone else's post about and it got me thinking. My dad has always told me when painting a blank it needs to be epoxy based, but I've talked to another rod builder who said it doesn't matter, keep in mind all rods will be fully flex coated.

I've never thought about scuffing a blank for the purpose of bonding, just wipe it down with DNA to get any oils off. I usually under wrap everything but I usually build higher class rods, even though I did just rewrap a st croix and didn't use under wrap. CP is necessary for nylon if you don't want the thread to change color/darken.

Don't be afraid to apply a decent amount of flex coat, it'll spin itself out, if it's building up in a particular spot hit it with a little heat and pull some off with the brush. I use to go too light with flex coat and it never looked right. You'll get the hang of it, just takes practice.

Thanks all, I'll post some pics soon. Nothing I've done so far has been super fancy I.e butt wraps but I may start experimenting soon with that.

All white rod with white grips, sounds sweet. I think I'd just add white pigment to the flex.
