Well....there's my million dollar invention......a rod with a wire/heating element going down the center to keep the rod guides "defrosted&

This will be my first Expo as an attendee. At what point is it advisable to make a reservation for the hotel?

While I am still new to rod-building I feel I must share this with others like myself.
About lunchtime yesterday the mailman delivered my copy of "Rod-Building Guide". I stopped to take a break from my yard work to "check it out" and did not put it down until reading through Chapter 2. Between finishing the yard work, cooking out on the grill for supper, attending church s

Don,
Thanks for pointing me in this direction. I liked their statement whereby "Best of all, GPS provides a suggested layout that offers a “starting point” where rod builders (and even factories) can then focus on fine tuning a particular set up for a truly custom, high performance rod." This tells me they recognize that there is no hard/fast calculation that will allow for other var

Just read Tom Kirkman's piece

Well, I;m trying to be like a sponge and absorb as much as I can. I've had many questions about guides and have performed many searches with some success. I finally decided to order Tom Kirkman's Guide CD (it arrived today) in an effort to learn as much as I can about the subject. I must say, this is a great CD and I should be a "guideologist" once finished!
With that said, I need s

What is the general consensus in the rod building community with respect to incorporating some type of alignment mark into the build for rods made in two pieces or more? Personally, I like the idea, and as a new rod builder may decide to come up with something along these lines (no pun intended) that will personally identify my build.

Although I am very new at rod building, it appears from all of my research that MHX seems to be the "Toyota Camry" of rod blanks.......good reliable blanks that won't break the bank.

After the above reply I did a search and found the following:
"There has never been any practical evidence that building on the spine does anything for you. Conversely, there has been quite a bit of actual data and facts that reveal that building on the spine simply isn't important and can actually result in a less than optimum final product." Spine doesn't matter...now I am really confused. Maybe when my "Rod-Building Guide: Fly, Spinning, Casting, Trolling" book arrives I will have a clearer understanding. My "understanding" was based on the following:

I recently ran across this rod whereby it is stated that the rod is a hybrid and can be used as a spinning or casting rod. I'm a little perplexed since it is my understanding that the guides should be placed on the "belly" of the spine of a spinning rod and on the "back" of the spine for a bait casting rod. How can a rod serve two masters? The only thing I can think of is if

18. Rod Recipes
As I have become totally immersed in my new found love for rod-building beyond the point of addiction, I have yet to find, for lack of a better term, a source for "Rod Recipes" in any searches. I'm wondering if such a resource even exists and if so, can someone point me in the right direction? Let's say I have a particular application. Maybe I want to jig for crappie, surf for flounder,

Some really good information and insight being shared here and is very much appreciated. It almost looks like it could be the making of a "how to" article!

Ken,
Thanks for the reply and the explanation as to why. The photo was a nice touch since I did not realize the degree to which the rollers were overlapping until now. It was perfect. Thanks again!

As I make final preparations to build a wrapper/dryer, I would like to ask if there are any advantages/disadvantages in the way the rollers are positioned with respect to each other. I see from various designs that some rollers are aligned and some are offset. If you built your own rod wrapper/dryer, how did you position yours and why, or does it really even matter?
