Ok some more information: Not sure on the line, I brought my own reels. I would guess 30-50# mono. Jigging for him is usually frozen (insert baitfish here) on a bucktail jig of 1-2 oz He usually fishes in 40-50 feet of water in the Gulf. Grouper are normally in the 5-12 lb range? I really don't know on this. Reds and gags anywhere from legal up to ~32" was the biggest I've eve

A buddy of mine wants a saltwater rod made. He currently uses a 7' Ugly Stik with moderate action and I think he said medium power. He uses this for pretty much everything offshore; grouper, snapper, kingfish and loves it. I wanted to make something similar and just had a couple questions. I found a Rainshadow blank that is pretty similar except med/heavy power that I am going to build on.

So this is my first attempt: I just did it on the gap in my split grip, and I'm actually pretty happy with how it looks. I would like to know how the color choices would affect it though. For this I did black and white on the bottom and blue on the top (obviously). Unless you really look hard you can't see any black on my wrap, which is good I wanted it to be white and blue. Is this bec

Oh really.. that's a shame. Live and learn I suppose. Is there any good way to clean off the bottom layer epoxy so that I can try again?

I finished the top wrap last night and put some color preserver on it. I then removed the thread and it looked pretty nice. However, this morning the pattern is much more subtle. I'm guessing I put too much CP on and it got onto the epoxy. Is there an easy way to remove the color preserver that's on the epoxy of my bottom wrap? I've already removed the thread because I wanted to rewrap it,

I've read a couple different guides on a tiger wrap, and some have different information than others. One says that on your top wrap you want to use a hair dryer to heat it up a little so that your threads will sink in a little. Another doesn't mention this step. How necessary is this? Also, do I want to use color preserver on either layer of the wrap?

I was working on a couple rods this weekend, one an ultralight and one an ice rod. One problem I kept running into was when I get to the guide foot, the thread would keep slipping under the guide foot. No matter how tight I tried to tape the guide on, it would always slip under the foot. Is this problem just because the diameter of the rod is so small? I was able to use a rubber band to get i

Mat, Do you know where I could find a blank with an extra fast tip (MHX calls it a power noodle, tuned up customs calls theirs a precision noodle) in 32"? I made one on the MHX version but I'm 99% sure I will end up selling it to someone as it's too short for my liking. The MHX power noodle is 26" I'm also looking for a good blank for lake trout, and probably one for walleye

Pretty much any relevant thread was 2-6 years old, so I figured I'd ask. Might have better luck on an ice fishing forum obviously... Does anyone make a fair number of ice rods? I'm looking for input on good quality ice blanks. I bought a few MHX blanks to build some ice rods out of, but that's only because my options seemed so few. Are there any other places to buy a good ice rod blank fro

I did try searching and couldn't find anything. If I search now mine is the only thread with the word grouper in it. If I search google however, there are a couple threads. Neither one had any specifics though. Thanks Geoff! I will use this as a good starting point

I figured I'd make a topic while I'm here and thinking about it... I have a couple months to practice before I actually need the rod, so hopefully I can make a decent rod by then. I'm going down to the Gulf to fish for some gags and reds. I want to build a rod for fishing out of a private boat. Normally we are in 40-60 feet of water jigging cut bait on the bottom. Aside from the length

I know I can buy a pre-made grip, I just wanted to give it a shot making my own. Also I would like to sand the grip to my liking. I will probably end up buying a lathe in the future

Finally got some free time to work on my first rod. One thing I can't figure out is how I would sand my grip. I don't have a lathe or power wrapper. How can I go about this? My best thought was to just put the cork on a dowel and put the dowel in a drill? If this will work, how would I go about sanding the butt section? I'm trying to make a split grip out of cork rings. The butt section is

New question for an ice rod grip... The butt OD on an MHX power noodle is .252, and their other ultralight rods are .145-.155. The smallest cork rings I see on Mudhole have a .25 ID. How do I go about making a grip for an ice rod?

I bought a bunch of cork rings so I can try my hand at making my own grips, however I was wondering how to do a split grip? Mainly, what are the black things on the end of the cork seen in this picture: I noticed most of my rods I own have these on the top of the grip as well, split grip or not.

Hi everyone, Just a couple questions if anyone could answer for me. First, does anyone know if a place that sells rod building materials in West Michigan? Second, what websites do you guys like for buying components? Mudhole seems like the most common, but if I needed to buy just a couple things at a time, is there a better place to do it? I know I can come up with $150 worth of stuff
