Hi Guys
I like using Snake Brand snake guides as the feet on them need no work, filing and straightening etc and look uniformly good, can anyone recommend a single leg guide of a similar quality please? The few I've tried just don't look very nice under a clear wrap.
Many thanks, John

Hi Guys
I've made two rods so far and have used FlexCoat SCS on the guide wraps and been very happy with the finish. I've not used it for a few months and stuck it on a shelf above the cooking range in the kitchen to warm up before using it on my latest rod build. I've noticed a small amount of condensation in the top of the bottle, I've done a test mix and it has cured okay but have a few quest

Hi Jason
As a fly fisherman I have always enjoyed tying my own flies. I can definitely buy flies cheaper than I can make them, but for me it's not about money it's the satisfaction of tying my own flies and catching fish on them.
I've recently got in to rod building for the same reason. I only build for myself (I'm just working on my second rod) and get a huge amount of satisfaction from buildi

Hi Roger, Good question, and frankly I'm not sure I know! I'm a total novice that likes to experiment. I was playing around with wraps and liked the look of a smaller wrap and once it's finished it's all but invisible so wondered if I needed to wrap the whole foot. In my defense, when messing around, I've wrapped more than half the foot and guess it's more like 80%, just leaving a 'big toe' expos

10. minimal wraps
I'm into only my second rod build, a fibreglass fly rod, and wanting to experiment
I'm using white silk thread and no CP to give a transparent wrap. my question is about how much I have to whip the guide feet.
Is it okay to start at the top of the foot and leave the end of the guide foot unwrapped? I realise I'd need to extend the epoxy beyond the foot but wanted to minimise wrap and epoxy. H

Hi Guys
I'd like to re-whip some rod guides. I've checked the library and tried searching but had no results. Any advice welcomed please on how to remove guide epoxy and whippings and cleaning blank of old epoxy.
Thank you
John

If using more than one coat as what stage do you apply a second coat - when the first coat is cured or while it's still tacky? is there any treatment to the first coat before applying further coats?
Thank you

I'm a total novice to rod building and recently finished my first rod. I used a MHX F904-4 (9' 4wt) and am very pleased with the results. It's a great tool, light and responsive a nice rod to fish with.

Thanks for the suggestions. I live in the UK and importing a Steffen looks to be an expensive option, so will probably go for CTS or Epic. I can buy Epic blanks in the UK but CTS are more difficult to come by and a friend gets his straight from NZ.
Any suggestions on colour or do you prefer an unpainted blank? Would a painted blank perform much differently?
Thanks again guys

I've just finished my first rod build on a MHX fly blank (thank you Mudhole). I'm so pleased with it I want to get straight in to my next project.
I want to build a 7'6" #4 or #5 fly rod on a fibreglass (s-glass) blank, so far I've looked at CTS and Epic but do any of you guys have any thoughts or recommendations?
Thank you

I'm just undertaking my first rod building project. I'm building a 9' #4 fly rod using MHX blanks. I have read a variety of articles about how to find the spine in the blank, however I am really struggling as the blank sections appears to deflect similarly in each direction. How critical is it to spine a rod? I understand at least one prestigious American tackle manufacturer doesn't spine their r
