Harold,
Sevier Manufacturing has new 6' 2 weight 4 piece blanks. We've done a lot of testing with them and the fly shops that have tried it have raved about it.

Jimi,
Thanks for the quick reply- I also emailed you a longer response.
It all comes down to labeling 100 rods at a time and finding the most efficient way to do it.

Do the manufacturer's have their logo's and rod information screen printed on their rods?
I know some of the smaller manufacturer's like T&T use decals but what about the Sage's and TFO's of the world??

Tom,
I'll blast out a few emails and see what I get back- the only thing I could think of was the pressure from flying at 30,000 feet and being in a sealed rod tube might have something to do with it.
I'm stumped on this one though.
thanks

Thanks for the reply Tim,
In some cases you can leave a fingerprint in others it just feels tacky.
The rods typically site 2-3 days before shipping out.

7. Tacky Finish
We do a fair amount of business in Australia and have been experiencing an issue with a number of rods getting shipped.
We've utilized both Diamondite and Threadmaster for the finish so I don't believe it is related to the finish being utilized-
Both are measured in flexcoat syringes and mixed in a power mixer for 2-5 minutes depending on the finish.
When the rods leave the shop the finish h

Spencer can you give us a little detail about "aviation layups" don't think I've heard that term before. Are you referring to structural tresses in the blank itself or something else??

My experience has been the same as Bob's.
It's brought good money but no additional business or follow-up has ever occurred.
I almost liken it to @#$%&, except it's at least going to a good cause.

The Temple Fork Number One reels are some of the lightest on the market and fairly inexpensive @ $99.00 or so.
We've found them to be a perfect balance for our Winding Brook small stream rods.

They are a far East product. I would speak to Mick Bell, he has a lot of contacts over there.

The differences between off-shore blanks and US made blanks are almost unnoticeable. Companies such as TFO have not only their blanks made in Korea but the entire rod, and they have been booming in sales.
The same factory that makes TFO will sell a quality blank of IM8 for $13.00.
The big difference is the builder spending the time to build it properly and with the utmost care.

Tim,
If you're looking for lengths of sections that is very easy, take the number of sections and divide the # into the total length of the rod.
All fly rods I've built have sections that are equal in length.
take for example:
9 Foot fly rod- 4 piece
108 inches divided by 4= 27 inches per section
This formula can be used on most everything except some of the British Surf casting rods,

Gene,
You could probably use the St. Croix guide spacing chart for beginners and then do static deflection testing to finish proper placement of guides.

16. Re: Extra Tips
The reason I was asking is we have been selling a lot of rods to Australia and just signed a small distributor agreement with a company out there, and since 99% of the failures are in the tip section it would be beneficial to have extra tips on hand in Australia for replacement purposes in case one does fail.

17. Extra Tips
Guys,
Any manufacturer/distributor out there that can supply an additional tip for warranty persons, or stock them in case of a tip explosion?

18. Glue Cleaning
I glued a reel seat today with Gorilla Glue. The seat was well taped to prevent the glue from getting on it, but there were a few areas of the knurled seal that abuts the cork that had glue on it.
Even wiping with denatured alcohol and it's still there- anyway to remove this without trashing the seat altogether??

Wylie,
I used US Postal service to ship 2 rods about a month ago to Australia. Very reasonable at 39 dollars or so.

20. Drywall Tape
Guys,
I've battled with fiberglass drywall tape, and it's always been a pain, especially when using a glue like Titebond or gorilla glue when you have to moisten both surfaces, and the tape keeps unraveling.
What I did today cured all my issues. I used two quick dabs of hot melt glue and it worked perfectly. Now I know when I put the reelseat over it after I've applied the adhesive it won't

Thanks for the photos. In looking at them I find it interesting where the guides are grooving, you would have thought the grooving would have been on the bottom of the guides, not on the sides.
Is the grooving more due to line speed on the cast and the braid grooving it at that point vs. the retrieve?
Seems to suggest a combination of speed and braid, and not just braid.

Mike,
We've used the RX8+ for our high end rods and have had nothing but rave reviews from clients. We specifically like the 9' in 9 or 10 weight for the big stripers we get here in New England

Denny,
Is this a 2 piece or 4 piece Sage. I had one come into the shop about 8 weeks ago, and it was a 2 piece, grey blank with black aluminum reel seat. The memory is going, but I thought it was either a GL or GF series.
The guy wanted to know how much it might be worth and I said it might be worth $150.00

Is there a secret to holding the tape down as you slide the reel seat over the tape. You guys just use a small amount of masking tape or is there another trick i can use.

Larry,
I drilled a hole in my bottles slightly smaller than the syringe. It has such a snug fit that when you tip the bottle upside down with the syringe still in it you can then fill the syringe with whatever amount you need. The tight fit acts like a cap, so I just leave the syringe in.
