Wow, thanks, that's exactly the look I'm after!

Ok, great. So I'll lay down black and silver as the base and green on top. I'm looking for a green-ish look but not to "milky" or light. I assume the blacka nd silver will provide a bit of darkness but enough contrast to make the effect work well. THANKS!

I have very limited thread on hand as I wanted to make my first few rods with a common color theme. I have Fuji Ultra Poly Metallic Silver, Fuji Ultra Poly Medium Green, and Prowrap Black - all in Size A. Would recommend a Black/Silver base with Green on top or a Green/Silver base with black on top? Which would appear more black and which more green? Thanks.

Hi everyone, I am just about finished with my first build and my tip top seems too big. My blank is a MHX SJ833 and the spec says its a 5, but my American Tackle NCRLLT 5(5) tip top seems to fit very loose. I tried a 4.5 but it's too small - so, I'm somewhere in between. I would assume that tip tops are made to failry exact IDs, so do I just wrap thread on the tip to make it slightly big

I understand what you're saying, and it makes sense. But the application in question is not merely a calculator, right? It's a custom written program. I am a computer programmer myself. If the GPS application calculated 4.5 guides then rounding down is a bug, IMO, as I doubt any of you long-time rod builders would agree that 4 running guides for 29" of blank would be a good idea. 5 is p

Ha...perhaps that what the app should spit out.... "4 running guides. 5, if it makes you feel better."

I used the latest GPS app to determine guides for a 7' spinning rod, 10 lb braid, 2000 series reel, spindle 12.5" from blank butt. It suggested proper guides (I have to imagine)...but only 4 running guides? That seems low, right? That's one runner for every 7.25 inches at the top. I am doing my first build so I am inclined to just follow what the app recommended - but it doesn't jive wit

Thanks everyone. So far, I think I have 3 options so far as lettering... * Use my brother handheld with white on clear tape ** Use a nib tip and some kinid of good ink or paint (I read that silver Testors works well) *** Spend $200 on a label printer (which would cost me about $50/label. Assuming I ony make 4 rods in the next year or so) As for my logo (my nano brewery logo modified

Thanks Jay. I doubt I'll build enough to justify a $200 label maker, either. I might, but not having built a single rod yet, it wouldn’t' be a prudent buy. I wish my Brother labeler did silver - I decided on silver accents throughout my rod(s) so it would be ideal. Have you tried white letters? On clear...or black lables? I really need to Google this “nib” pen everyone is talking about!

BTW...I did check out DecalConnection.com per this post: They might be my best best for prining my logo - or getting metallic lettering.

I found quite a bit on the forum regading printing lables for applying to rods - but most of it was very old. I have 2 questions that I'm hoping can be answered by just pointing me in the right direction - via a link, forum reference, etc. 1) Has anyone tried using one of the newer handheld lable printers that can print on clear tape? My Brother P-Touch printer claims, "P-touch TZe t

Thask David, apprecaite the reply. I am making a lot of my own equipment. The house we just bought had a lot of scrap oak in the attic that I'll use to make the dryer. I have a small 20RPM DC gear motor and controller sitting around from back in my days of working as an industrail automations programmer. I have a cart waiting for checkout at mudhole.com totally $227. The actual rod component

Thanks for the honest input Bill. I have found people on the forum, and elsewhere online, saying you can most definitley build a rod cheaper than you can buy off-the-shelf and I've found others saying not to get in to the hobby if you think it's going to say you $$. I think it all depends on several factors - how you define a rod's value being a key piece of the equation. Considering the perso

Thanks for the reply friend, but you didn't re-read the post close enough or you would have read where I explicitly pointed out that I dind't see anything "bad" or "overly subjective" in this thread, either. From the post directly above yours... "...I can see by the posts I’ve been reading (not this thread mind you) ..." I understand that 100% of everyone read

Thanks for all the great advice. I can see that rod building is a bit like brewing, a hobby of mine for almost 20 years. Most folks new to the addiction are told to start out by purchasing a kit. It has all you need to make pretty good beer and you don't need to bother with the intricacies of recipe design, complicated mash schedules, or building advanced brewing equipment. You need only to f

Thanks a lot guys, this has been very helpful. As you might imagine, I want to keep the cost down on my first build as it likely won't be as nice as, say... my 3rd or 4th, etc. But, at the same time, I don't want to build the equipment and invetst the time only to end up with the equivalent of an Ugly Stik. The consensus here is that if I buy even a $40 blank, use fairly decent materials, an

Thanks Tom, that's very helpful. Here in St. Louis I don't believe I have anywhere to go and check out blanks firsthand so I'm reliant on information I can get online and then take a leap of faith when buying a blank. Pat

This is my first build and I am replacing my most used (and recently broken) BPS Extreme M spinning rod. I fish mostly 4" tubes, creature baits, and soft jerkbaits with this rod. I am considering the MHX SJ843 for this initially build. I'm having a hard time understadig the rod blank to commercial price difference. Can a $60 blank really produce a rod comparable to a $200 commercial bu

I have a few off-the-shelf rods I really like, curious how I go about determining the blanks used. Would they even be readily available? BPS, Berkley, Shimano, etc.
