I've used Gudebrod A-size with CP and it didn't remain very white. The rod blank color still shown through, so I ended up doing a second wrap on top of it to get a solid white.
Another suggestion from other builders was that I could use white out or white paint to paint the wrap area before wrapping on white thread, which would eliminate the rod blank color from showing through. I have ye

Go for it! That's how I started out. I didn't have the budget to buy blanks and wrapping equipment. But I had a ton of old rods, some blocks of wood, bought some used guides, thread and off I went. Even stripping a rod is a good learning experience.
There's a lot of videos out there that'll help get you started.

I'm building a 2-pc Light spinning which I'm thinking of applying epoxy only, no thread, on the ferrule. Would just applying epoxy have enough strength to prevent split-out?
For a light rod I'm thinking it might be ok but what if it was a M or MH rod, would epoxy without thread wrap over ferrule be strong enough?

I used a gold leaf marker to paint my silver hoods. Let it dry and coat with thread finish. It's held up just fine.
