That was actually pretty cool to watch! Would be an interesting experience to try one of those rods and compare it with a bamboo rod.

Geoff and Eugene: thanks a lot for your input. Maybe the CCS need some conversion factor as mentioned.
Eugene, can you please elaborate a bit how this rod would fit a 9-10 weight line? Would be very interesting to hear more.
And Geoff, any more info to be found about ERN-2 and -4 for switch and spey rods?
Thanks in advance.

It would be interesting to hear others run a CCS on a 14-15" spey rod or blank and see what it takes to deflect the blank a 1/3 of its lenght.
My three rods are from different makers. It seems far fetched that all three would suffer the "broomstick syndrom ". Just saying....
I've added the guides today so maybe I get a chance to do some tests with different lines tomorrow.

Hi Billy.
I've been Using U-40 and some other water based CP. Main problems were inconsistent colors. Or blotchy rather.
For me it's better to do some test wraps on a scrap blank without CP so you know what you will get as a final result.
I have never tried NCP so I was qurious about how that would work. I guess I'll have to try some before I pass judgement.

I'm probably old school, but I use dry wall tape. Works for me.

Really? Wow, I haven't used any NCP thread so that good to know. How would you define "nicer color"? No offenses intended, just quirius. I was planning to buy some NCP...
My own experience with CP is not the best. D

Haha.. :-) Point taken Tom.
I actually do have a 16 weight line though...
Guess I just got to try different lines.
Thanks.

Also understood. Testing different line weight and the preferred line lenght with the rod is crucial. No argue there.
So, what ERN does 7994 grains equals? Something in the neighborhood of 18?

I could not get this out of my head so I checked two other spey rods and did a CCS analysis. So here is the results:
First rod, another 14', three pcs. This was labeled as #9/10. A 1/3 of the blank was flexed at 7186 grains (466 grams)
AA 70
Tip dia 2,7 mm
Butt dia 16,5 mm
Second rod, 15', also three pcs. 1/3 of the blank flexed at 6846 grains. (444 grams)
AA 77.
Tip dia. 2 mm
Butt di

Steelhead and salmon.

I couldn't find the specs for but & tip diameter. I'll check further.
But could it be that other parameters should be in the picture since this is a spey rod? The casting technique for a spey cast is quite different than a normal overhand cast. There are two groups of Spey casts, the "splash and go" and the "waterborne anchor". Splash and go casts contain a backstroke that

Understood. But a 10 weight rod dealing with 30 feet of #10 line should handle about 3400 grains. This rod needs 7994 grains to be deflected a 1/3 of its length.
Although I'm fairly good handling a spey rod, I do not think I can manage that length needed.....
But I will test some different lines when I have added the guides. Will get back then.

Will do. I just hope I can find a line that can load this sturdy monster rod.
Get back to you with a report when I've tried it.

AA is 68 degrees.
The top section looks really sturdy compared to other rods I've built.

Hi Geoff.
That's correct. Exactly 518 grams. I have never experienced anything like that. It's a three piece blank with following dimensions:
But dia. 17,5mm
Mid dia. 11,2 mm
Tip dia. 2,3 mm
I have already added the reel seat and the grips so I can't give you the blank weight.
Does that make any sense?
Kind regards
Göran.

I'm building a 14' spey rod. It's labeled as a 10/11 weight.
So here's the weird part: I always check the ERN / AA and the CCF.
On this rod the ERN readout was out of the charts. At a 1/3 deflection, I needed to add 7994 grains!
After double check and re-checking, I received the same result.
ERN 16 equals 6680 grains, and I need to load this blank with 7994 grains and it's labelled as a 10/11

Will try different lines and lengths. Was hoping to find a sylk fly line somewhere, but no luck yet. I saw that Cortland have a line with "sylk feel". Maybe that could work as a substitute.
Anyone who's has any experience with that line?

Thanks for the fast answer.
Yes, I was suspecting that.... Well, I'll have to go down in line number or do shorter casts with a #4 line.
It will be a beautiful rod anyway, agate strip guide, wolfram snake guides and transparent sylk wraps with tung varnish.
Thanks again.

I've just completed checking a bamboo blank using CCS and the result was a bit puzzling.
The blank should be a # 4, but a 1\3 of the flex is obtained at 976 grains. That would put it around ERN 2,7. (AA 62)
Are there any others rules to consider using CCS on bamboo blanks?

+1 on that. Really nice work on the grip.

Hello all.
New guy on the forum. Picking up rodbuilding again after many years. Kids grown up... :-)
I have a 8 feet, 6 section fly blank. ERN =6 (well, 5,94 to be exact.) and AA = 62 degrees according to CCS.
I have just got my Fuji gold cermet guides delivered, so now I'm ready to go.
But after all these years I'm kinda rusty. I would appreciate any suggestion on guide placement.
