I should have said this another way, when you build a fly rod what determines if you use a up lock or down lock reel seat, or is this personal preferance.

The comment was made that sensitivity in a fly rod doesn't matter I disagree I believe that sensitivity and action of the blank make a big difference in the way a fly rod casts. you definitely need to feel the rod load on the back cast and sensitivity also is important when fishing a sinking line, or nyph.

I just purchased a 60" piece of Kevlar handle material now I have a question what is the best way to cit this without damage to the material I was thinking of warping masking tape where I need to cit and then using a cut off blade in my miter saw. Anyone have a better idea?

The best Salmon rod i have ever used is the Lamiglas XCC 1112H 9' 3" line 15-30 Lure 1-8 oz. in fact I am building one right now. this rod is very versatile I have used it mooching, trolling rivers such as the Willamette and Columbia. the problem is the blank is hard to get takes about 3 weeks but worth the wait. I don't know if the wait is because of the demand or the problems Lamaglas see

Wow thanks for all the detail this customer wants to fish the Dipsy in conjunction with down riggers magnum Dipsy on each side with rod holders ahead of the down riggers (ahead towards the bow) these will be fished off a 23" Boston Whaler conquest. Is there a problem fishing Dipsy divers and down riggers together? I have built a lot of down rigger rods but this will be my first dipsy rod.

Thanks for the information I just finished a Steelhead spinning rod using a MHX ST1143 and am very impressed, I had been using Batson ST1143 I realize a lot of this is personal reference but I feel that the MHX has an edge. please understand that Batson makes a great product also.

I have had some requests for larger striping guide some feel it gives them a better shoot when casting. I don't feel the larger guide on the butt effects the performance that much, Myself I am for the smaller guides.

I ran into this when I attempted to warranty a G Loomis blank several years ago. Needless to say I had a very unhappy customer and I ended up buying him another blank out of my pocket., from then on I made sure that the manufacture label was attached,. Before I left manufacture label off I would read their warranty including the fine print .

Some blank manufactures will void the warranty if their decal is not affixed to blank.

I use the first four guides for the spiral the first guide is a size 16 and placed in line with the reel as in a conventional casting rod I have not had any stacking problems and I have built a lot of downrigger as well as casting rods and halibut rods with no problem

The sowing machine bobbin will work just fine. An investment in a hand wrapper purchased or home made will save you a lot of time and frustration . As far as thread tension you should be able to move the guide after it is wrapped, too tight can damage the blank. you will also need a rod drier I made my first one out of a rotisserie motor. I also made my first rod using books for thread tension.

Fred Thanks for pointing that out I guess it was getting to late when I composed this. It was after midnight. Rod building opens up a whole new side of fishing. If you love fishing rod building is like making lures or tying flies it can give a great deal of satisfaction. when you catch a fish on something you have made yourself. You can build a much better rod than you can buy off the rack

In the late 1970's I purchased a Sage FIBERGLASS steel head drift rod. this rod was more sensitive and caught more fish than any other rod I had ever owned. This sent me on a search to find out why. To make a long story short this rod was made of S glass. I also looked into how graphite rods were made, so the next steep was to build my own rods. I purchased a book called Fiberglass rod building b
