I have built about 30 fly rods for everthing from trout to tarpon using Rainshadow and Forecast blanks from Batson. All my customers are really happy with them. Yes the stem goes into the blank. The little flange that the reelseat fits on is not enough to hold when putting pressure or leverage on when fighting a fish. Depending on how much space there is glue will fill it. The glue has to get between the stem and the blank to hold anyway. And the outside is reinforced by the reelseat. I don't know how much space you've got there. Wrap some thread on it?

He wants a pac bay blank. They only come in 9' length. Can you cut 6" off the butt. Do I dare do that?

You don't have to be crazy to this...but it helps. I started 10 months ago and so far have made 31 rods. I Love it. You might be a rod builder if; your nightime reading is componant catalogs.

I'm going to be building a 12 wt rod with a fight grip. How far above the regular grip should it be placed? Should I fill in between the two with thread and or a hookeeper? I'm sure it's not too complicated, just looking for input and ideas.
