I've fished walleye and perch on Lake Erie for years, perch using the same method you describe. a light to medium light power with a moderate to moderate/fast action is about what you want. There is no casting involved hear so don't let the 1 oz muddy the waters. Batson Revalation blanks REVS62ML-SB and REVS62L-SB are both good candidates. I have built perch rods on both depending on customers pe

I built the XCW70MHM as a casting blank for my neighbor to use for crank baits, top water and spinners. I was impressed with the blank, plenty of power in a fairly light weight blank.

I never paid much attention to balance until I started building rods. I build mostly walleye and bass rods and now try to balance them out within reason depending on how they will be used. It can be difficult with split grips, but the easiest way is to start with a good light blank and use micro guides of some sort. I typically use micro/tidal wave, nano micros, minimas, or Kigans depending on if

I second the microwave guides, I also really like the nano micro spinning set, and Kigan also makes some nice guides

The wraps did come off easily(thank goodness)except for the end trim bands, I think because the epoxy on the end carried over directly to the blank and last couple trim bands. I will re-wrap this weekend and let you all know. Based on all your input and some decisions on my end, I will rough up the guide feet, Forhan wrap, increase tension, and use different thread with no cp. thanks again for al

To be more clear and following the post by Rich, the stripper and second guide pulled out the easiest, I simply decided to put pressure on all after those came out so easily. Of the remaining 7 guides 2 pulled out fairly easily and the remainders pulled out but required more pressure. I will defiantly add more tension, but I didn't think tension alone was the sole issue, light on tension possibly

Thanks guys, I will increase the tension, I wonder if temp had a little to do with it also. I moved my set up to the basement and temps are much cooler down there. I closed off the heat vent and did not plug in the little space heater I use when finishing because the last rod I finished down there had a lot of dust/dirt in the finish. I had the heat up when I warped and used the cp, but it was mu

No metallic used, but seemed like the epoxy did not soak in to the thread. I've only used cp twice before this build with mixed results. First one came out well, second was blotchy color wise, so I made sure I used two coats this time and allowed it to dry for a day before coating with epoxy.

10. Guide pull out?
So, I was just about to ship out a recent build to a customer and was looking over my guides when I noticed the first guide was off slightly. After closer inspection the guide seemed loose and pulled right out from under the finished wrap very easily, I then decided to test some of the others and easily pulled every guide off the blank? The guides are a tidal wave spinning set, the blak is a Bats

Take a look at the PAC bay GBS exposed blank spinning real seat. Up locking with blank exposed where your thumb would be, I trim the back threads to be flush and use a large rubber winding check on the front and back with no rear grip. It makes for a lightweight sensitive grip.

Elastic sewing thread $0.99 at Wal-mart, works well. Tie a strand around the blank, slide the guide under and position where you want and cut it off once you have the wrap started.

13. Re: Nano guides
Chris,
I bought them as a set from mud-hole BNMG-13S the kit consist of
BNMG-2 (x10)
BF3XG-4 (x1)
BM3XG-8 (x1)
BM3XG-20 (x1)
BHK-S (x1) small black hook keeper
I only used 6 of the size 2 on this particular blank XSB783 6'6" with a BFM3XT-3 micro tip
Guide dimensions from the tip are 3 3/4 , 6 3/4 , 9 1/2 , 12 1/2 , 16 1/2 , 21 3/8 , 27 1/2 , 35 , 44 1/4
I have used the size

14. Re: Nano guides
I have built 3 casters (2 conventional 1 acid) and 2 spinning with the nano micros and I like them. Two of the casters were for customer who used them for bass fishing and he loved the accuracy and weight reduction they provided. I built 1 of the spinners for my son for bass/walleye, I just got back from a Florida trip where I had a chance to test this rod out on snook reds and jacks. The rod wor

I'm really impressed with the Batson XSB-783, I've built two for walleye fishing on Erie and will most likely be building a few more before spring.

16. Re: micro guides
I recently did a couple of rods using the nanomicro guides (size #1). I used elastic sewing thread to hold the guides on the rod and a tooth pick through the eye of the guide to place them under the elastic thread I had tied on the rod. With the guides held in place with the elastic it allowed me both hands to start the wrap and minimize the rod flex. Once I had the wrap half way up the eye I jus

Elastic thread here also $0.98 at Wal-Mart, I just did a rod with the "nano micro" #1 size guides and the elastic thread was a lifesaver. I normally use sliced up surgical tubing as rubber bands but I couldn't cut them small enough for these microscopic guides. A toothpick worked really well to place and move the guides, the id of the guide locked up on the taper of the toothpick firmly

Thanks for the info, I received them in today and I like them. They are a little smaller in diameter than I thought, but will work well for the lightweight build I am working on. I may order the size 18 for myself once I see how these two rods come out.

Has anyone used this seat? I couldn't find any info when I did a search. I'm curious about a few things
-is it a comfortable seat in hand
-does anyone have a picture of one assembled to a rod with a reel
-is the up lock nut intergal to the palm hood
-What are you thoughts on this seat compared to Aero seat
I think I would like the idea of having my thumb on the blank, and I would probably
