Thanks guys , sorry its taken so long to reply, took a swim with my phone which is my only means of internet for another week . This rod will actually be used on Oregon coastal rivers / streams. For winter steel.I have actually never seen anyone around here use acenterpinrod , just standard 9' rods with spinning reels.but my buddy knows a guy who I guess does very well with a pin rod. The info a

Hey guys, been a few months since I've wrapped any rods and have a buddy that's wants me to build him a float rod.never built one and nver even handled a true float rod . It's gotta be a budget rod so I was thinking and anglers roost spey blank as I really like the spey I built on it.but I'm unsure as how to figure out what blank would work for and 8-12lb line rating since there only rated for sp

thanks guys for the good advice and measurements, i know im not going to be able the find a drill bit of any sort thats going to cut 1.275 so im thinking about going with a 1-5/16 bit, i think that if i keep downward prssure on the cork it should fit well enough to give clean cuts. theres only .0375 difference if i use a 1-5/16. as far as the saw goes i bought a jewellers / coping saw with a 52tp

Would anyone please measure the approximate inside diameter of the cork ring slicing jig. I'm trying to make my own jig and am trying to figure out what diameter to make the hole at. I'm thinking 1 5/16 or 1 3/8 so the rings will slide in and out easily but don't want to much slop. Thanks for any advice.

wow thanks for all the comment's. im pretty set of the hf lathe(the one roger mentioned) right now it fits in the budget and im normally not one to buy the cheapest out there but i just cant justify a few hundred extra for just doing grips. i may get into doing some wood items later but as of now i dont really have much desire to make and bowls or pens. rod building is so new to me still that i d

Hey guys I earned a few extra dollars at work this month and am looking to spend the money on a lathe or power wrapper to start doing custom grips.I like the idea of the lathe because I can turn the grips off of the blank and turn wood accents if I like .I'm looking at lathe from harbor freight with a 17" bed for pretty cheap. Or just a very basic power wrapper for a little more. I'm wonderi

Well thanks again guys I took my first whack at stripping down the bad wraps and have successfully got all of them cleanly off so far.. there will be no more putting epoxy on at freezing temps. Next on my list when I get some extra cash will be rod drying box. I really appreciate everyone's input thanks again

Donald - nylon,no cp,no oil that I could tell but I have working mans hands that are thoroughly doused in oil everyday but I wash them to my best, ability.I use a brooder / heat lamp to heat and keep epoxy flowing. As far as how the thread slides, I'll have to check. I mix 3cc each part even if I'm only doing 2 wraps. And I take my time but when the epoxy starts to harden from its very fluid sta

Well guys after putting on the last coat after cutting burs off and letting dry I realized I have some serious finish problems. First it didn't come out even on like 6 wraps,2nd there are what looks to be Like pockets of air trapped under 2 of my ferrule wraps. And 3rd I can seebrush marks in 2 wraps. I have no idea what has happened, idk if its from continuing to put finish on in my 35 degree ga

I use 1/16 or maybe its 1/8 green tape that can be found at specialty auto paint places, seems to work good and if I really needed it any smaller I could easily cut it in half with my knife.

well my second coat of finish finally dried and after closer inspection i noticed that there are quite a few pieces of thread poking out in a few wraps. ive never had this problem before and figure it must be from me being overly excited on this rod and rushing through it. im thinking about trying to use some finger nail clippers and trim them off or using my exacto knife. this is only my 6th rod

Thanks john that seems like a great idea I have plenty of big boxes right now from my recent move, that I could use and a heat lamp.

thanks again guys after hearing everyone's opinion it sounds like i need to make a drying box of some sort or just build rods in the summer time lol. also i usually leave my rods rotating till the epoxy has completely cured, if i take them off when there still tacky after 8hrs or so and put them in my closet or something will it affect the finish at all? i dont think it would but i'd rather be sa

Thanks Russell, and yea I could try and heat my garage, but I'm pretty much a cheap @ss and. Feel its a waste. Also its a spey rod so length issues are a big problem. I'm thinking about putting it on the kitchen counter after My 2yr old goes to bed but I have a gut feeling ill wake up to a snapped rod or it'll be stuck to his hands lol. I'll have to look up how others have built a drying box , b

Hey guys, just put on my first coat of tm lite last night approx 14hrs ago.this is my first time using tm and only my 5th rod and it is still tacky which I assume from reading other posts about it, is because my garage temp is only ~ 35 degrees. When I just checked it, it left a finger print on the finish. Do I want to wait for it to harden a little more before I go for my 2nd coat or is it good

Phil- yes I was thinking about trying to re use the cork off of the 2wt I know typical spey rods have longer front handles , I might instead just buy the mini spey handle kit from anglers roost.and I meant lower handle. Roger- great idea I have a st vinnys, salvation army, and good will all within a mile of my work . I never would've thought to check those places. I was thinking about gettin

thanks guys for the great idea's , all the options everyone listed seems great, i might just go with the rec components or doubling up the pieces into the butt, seeing as the only other broken blank i have is a ocean boat rod thats wayy to big. i was hoping to build this rod for fairly cheap using the cork and reel seat i have off of the 2wt, and then just extending the blank and buying a fixed

Thanks guys, I figured it wouldn't be the best to use a lighter blank but since it was only gonna be 6" I wansnt sure. I'll just hold off and see if I can find another blank. Idk why I'm even building a trout spey, since I started rod building I just seem to find any excuse for a new rod lol.

hi everyone, im gonna be building a 11' 5wt ( single hand weight) into a trout spey / switch rod , and was wondering about epoxying 6" off the butt of a broken 2wt blank i have for some extra length. will mixing 2 different blank weights in the handle affect the performance of the rod? i dont think it would make any difference but wanted everyone's opinion? sorry if this is a dumb questio

bill- ive always wondered if there was really much of a difference between fly & reg blanks besides the fact that the word "fly" is involved and it costs out the @$$ , but will a regular blank perform the same as a fly blank in normal single hand casting situations?

herb- thank you for the offer, from what i have read they seem to be one of the best blanks available. but with the blanks being in the $300-400 range, they are way out of my price range. unless you have really good deals on some. im hoping to get into spey fishing for less than $400 complete setup if thats even possible. terry- i see that anglers habitat has a 13' 7wt kit for roughly $175 that

thanks everyone for the suggestions, i took ur guys advice and tried it at the river tonight and had no problems. just the worry of an inexperienced builder & caster. the rod seemed to be very smooth with a moderate / slow action. i couldnt get very tight loops with it casting a heavy streamer, but that probably comes from my lack of casting heavy streamers. i had another off topic question f

hi everyone new to forums and rodbuilding. so far i have built 2 rods, both fly and 9' 7wt's. one on a lamiglass blank , with snake guides , not sure which model as i got it from a local rodbuilder. and the second on a batson rx7 if907-m with sf ceramic guides.both turned out good i think especially the batson rx7. i had dan craft set me up with the sf ceramic guides , and before i wrapped the ro
