As you can see in all the pictures we had things well organized. The first day it took us an hour to get everything set up, I had 7 adults making the wrapping boxes, cutting the guide tubing to hold the guides on the rods and then others helping set up the tables with the janitors of the school. All and all from the teachers to the students they are all enjoying building their own fishing rods.

here if you look closely you can see some students with their hands up needing some help. Sometimes there were kids that could help their fellow students and then would jump up and help us instructors. As the ratio from student to instructor wasn't that good. By the end of two hours the instructors were refreshed but also the ones that had bad backs were feeling the pain of bending over behind th

Here you can see one of the instructors helping this young man hold his wrapping box. The young man is reaching in and getting his next guide to wrap. The instructors I used were either past students of mine or customers that live here in Arizona.

As you can see in this picture a student wrapping his first guide on his fishing rod. You can see just how intent he is in finishing it. We had 120 students, we broke them down to 60 students every hour. And the instructors had all they could do to keep up with the demands of the kids.

Here you can see how we set up the rod building class, we made the wrapping benches out of boxes with notches and then had the spools of thread in cups and the tensioners were reams of paper. The kids had fun and the instructors went away with smiles on their faces.

The pictures you see here are of a rod building class I did with a school of fifth graders. This school is a Charter 1 school which means these kids come from low income families. The kits were donated so they didn't have to purchase them. To see the kids the first and second week with their smiles and just couldn't believe when they finish their fishing rods they get to keep them.

This is really nothing new in the field of rod making if you go back when Berkley had the Series One rod it was a split grip and I was building rods before that with a split grip. It all depends on the customer and also the trend like anything else in this world look at clothing styles the old is coming back in style again? Neal Cissel Neal's Fishing Products

I have used the epoxy mixer and it works great for mixing your coating for wraps. And I am sure it will work with any epoxy glue that is liquid but I don't think it will work on the paste epoxy, I haven't tried it but I think it would make the steel ball jump out of the cup and really wouldn't mix it like it does with the liquid epoxies. On the Batson line of fly blanks I would recommend the RX7+ blanks as they have a faster action and if their is any wind on the coast you need that extra speed to get the fly out.

Batson has one of the largest selections of fly blanks and they have them in different price ranges as well. But you need to decide what action you are wanting and then some people prefer a certain color. You also would want to check into their warranty on the blanks as each manufacutre has different warranties on certain blanks. I haven't built any of the Matrix fly blanks so I can't say what th
