Besides the few local guides that work for free in exchange for fixing their broken rods, I have a couple of part-time bamboo rod maker apprentices and I also hire one student during the winter season to help out around the shop with "rough work". I've been very impressed with how much work I get out of these young guys. They learn a ton about rods and fishing but also how to fix thing

You can become very rich as a full time rodmaker, it just depends on what you consider "rich". For me, it's being able to put food on the table but mostly the simple satisfaction that I love what I do everyday. Having my family by my side through it all and meeting some of the best people in the world also makes it very worthwhile.
If you can keep your overhead reasonable (hard to d

No, not the movie! I'd just like to know who has flocked grips besides Tom K.? I'd really like to see some more photos and read about experiences with self-flocking. I might have to try this out just to be able to feel what a flocked grip feels like. They kind of look like an exotic species of trout found in the extreme high Rocky Mountians....the Fur Trout!
Is anyone offering flocking servi

Sam,
I use 24k gold plated nickle silver ferrules & reel seats on my signature bamboo rods. I use an electroplating process to plate the hardware. I also make replacement brass ferrules for restoration jobs. I usually plate these with nickle because the brass oxidizes very quickly. The 24K gold plated NS ferrules are actually cheaper to do. Let me know if I can be of any help.

I hate 'em! I think they are ugly and useless. I've sold over 100 bamboo rods and 100's of graphite rods with no hook-keeper. Never one complaint.

Martin,
First try soaking in alcohol. This may remove any old varnish or lacquer that was applied to the tip top. Then scrub with an acid brush or old toothbrush. For further cleaning try an ultrasonic bath in acetone or a de-greasing/cleaning agent. If you can get it clean but it still looks bad you might want to consider re-plating it with nickle. I am now offering electroplating services f

Josh,
I polish nickle silver every day in my shop. I use a bench top grinder that I took the wheel off and replaced it with a buffing wheel. I use red rouge for the nickle silver and it works great. Some of the old rods I get in for restoration and repair work really have a lot of dirt and corrosion on them and the buffing wheel makes even these components look like new in short time. I use t

My return emails to you keep bouncing back. I've got your number somewhere but it might take me a month to find it in this mess! Please email your number and I'll call you about the bamboo blank.

There will be at least two vendors selling a few rod building components, Custom Fly Rod Crafters (Los Pinos Rods) always brings some very nice reel seats and a few other items. Shelbyville Rod Co has about the best preformed cork grips I have seen.
