Hello to all - just a note in case anyone is considering a similar build. In april I built on a batson 1087. I used rec recoil guides in a new guide concept configuration.I went with a vs vM 150. It turned out incredibly light with the tip slightly down which made it perfect for live ly,s etc. I caught my first king mackerel on it. Handled the load very well. The drag is exceptional on the reel e

Hello to all , short question here- what is used to thin high build epoxy? Is it easier just to purchase some "low build" as well and just use that on the first coat? Thanks in advance for the replies- Stevereno

Thanks all for the replies. I am going to attempt the dreaded stingray skin grip. It will be over eva. The reel seat end will be somewhat tucked in on an oversized reel seat that I will arbor. The reason for the abrupt end is the difficulty of stitching the material and making it look presentable. I will have one continuous seam on the under side that will be stitched in a cross pattern with blac

Hi all , I appreciate all the info on the forum - it gives me lots of ideas. Now to the subject - what are some methods for a smooth gradual transition of say 1 1/4 diameter grip to 1/2 inch diameter blank. I have looked at several pictures in the photo library but I am not sure what the method or materials used is. Looks like shrink tubing but I am not sure . I am open to suggestions and I look

Good morning to all - Can anyone suggest a supplier for stingray skin for my next build ? The contact that I had never responded back and I don't have a clue where to begin looking . My new blank is a grey batson 1087 and it would be a perfect match. Thanks in advance for any replies -Steve Leslie

Hey all , it has been awhile since my last post. I am currently building a king mac rod for the Florida piers. After a lot of mulling it over I finally decided on the REC wire spin guides in a 25 , 16 , 10 to an 8 with seven 8s to the tip. Not strictly NGC. More of a modified KR concept with a rapid choke. The blank is a rainshadow 1087 with a vanstaal vm150. I will be using Momoi diamond in a 12

Thanks to all for the replies -Tom , it was prokote thread finish. I remixed and re applied last night and all is well. It is still slightly tacky but I think in another day it will be fine. I think it is very important to mix at least 5 minutes. The bubbles took care of themselves. See you all on the next project - STEVERENO

Hi Bill , I removed all that I could with a brush and a wipe down. It came off fairly easy and it will be easy to refinish. Thanks for helping me pull the trigger . STEVERENO

Hi Jay , I was using pre loaded syringes. Fortunately I will not make the same mistake again. I just wonder if I should remove it while it is still pliable. What is the normal dry time? I have it on a 6 rpm dryer. I understood it to be about 4 hours. Thanks again -Stevereno

Hey guys , I just realized that I mixed my epoxy at about 65% hardener to 35% resin for my guides. It went on very nicely and I only did the stripper guide as a test. I know that the ratio os 50-50 normally. Is it going to set up properly or will that ratio be a problem? Thanks - I will find out in about 4 hours at any rate. Stevereno.

Hello again to all , just thought I would update everyone on my first build. The choke point ended up at about a foot from the end of a 9 ft lami. I used 6 reduction guides to get there. I glued the handle components and set the guides according to the line path at 27x spool diameter which wound up being the same distance as the table edge method (coincidence ?). At any rate I could not be happie

Hi all , here's the skinny - 9 ft lami csb 108 2m. Will be a pier rod. Reel seat is 16 inches from butt end. I tried the microwave 30 mm set up and I was not crazy about it. I think it is a good system on some setups however. My 27x calculation came out to 76 inches. That left about a foot on the tip end from choker. I have a really nice line path ( bullseye ). I am using bmnag double foot alconi

Thanks guys , I guess I should clarify a few things. The line sweep is on the part of the guide that is farthest from the blank. Since a spinning guide hangs down I was calling the outside edge the "lower half'. Sorry for the confusion. I chose the 40 based on the approx. half of the spool diameter which is 2.85 inches. I thought that I read that that was how it is done. I will try a 30 also

Hello to all , great forum , lots of useful info , nice people. I finally assembled my 9 ft lami with the ngc. I went with a 40 to 25 to 16 to a size 8 runners and tip. Reel seat is at 22 inches. I assembled guides with rubber tubing so nothing is set yet. Anyway , I took it out for a test today and i averaged 70 yds. with 17 # mono and a 2 ounce plug. There doesn't seem to be any line slap and o

Thanks all , hey Jay , my intention was that if the rod hit the deck it would not take out one of the guide inserts. I am also considering some of the titanium guides for the weight aspect. Either way I want single foot guides past my choker. I appreciate the feedback. Keep em coming. Regards ,Steve Leslie

Hey gang ,I am building my first saltwater spinning rod. The butt diameter is .828 and of course it tapers from there. Should I size up the reel seat and arbor it or get fairly close and then epoxy fill.I guess a small arbor would keep the seat centered. I may have answered my own question. Also I will be using a short eva foregrip. Should I make that snug to the rod ? I know these are rookie que

Hello to all , just purchased the ssu 108 1m blank. It is rated at 15 to 30 lb test with a 1 to 3 ounce lure weight. It is a medium action. I intend to use it to throw LYs and cigars off of the Florida piers for Kings. I will also use 2 to 3 oz plugs for blues and whatever else shows up. What do you guys think? Will it have enough back end to turn a king? I will be using a mitchell 402 with mono.

Greetings all , I have read many posts on this forum and I keep hitting on the 27x method of guide placement . Briefly , what does that mean ? Thanks for all the other info that I have gleaned from this website. It has given me a great deal of confidence about building my own custom rod. Regards , Stevereno

Thanks for your time Jeb , you talked me into the 1143f. What is a COF layout? I'm pretty green when it comes to the lingo on this website. Also what about trimming the butt end? Yea or nay. Transport is a consideration so the shorter the better. How short is ok? I will be hanging my dinosaur 402 off of the rod. My dad would be proud! I remember him surf fishing with it when I was a kid. He was

Thanks for all the replies guys , Hey Russ - there is some value in a mint condition mitchell reel that I will be lucky to use twice a year. I live in Oklahoma. Hey Jeb , I did find the 1143f at merrick tackle. How would you describe the action on this rod? I will be slinging dead cigar minnows so I will need a flexible tip. Is it sturdier than the 1083? I will probably go with your recommendatio

Hello all , I'm glad I found this website. I intend to put together a rod for kings off of the panhandle piers. I am leaning towards a lamiglas blank -mb1083m. I will be casting live and dead baits. I chose the blank because of the tip action and backbone. What do you guys think . I want to keep the weight down. The kings average 10 to30 pounds so I think the rod is adequate. Also I like the look
