Bill, I would be very much interested to find one advertised in the web. If you have a link can you please pm me with it. I am really curious to see the pricing !!! I bet my boots they would'nt static test twice before they apply finish, or indeed go the length of measuring the reel height and the degrees prior to placing the guides!!

In my mind a Custom Rod is any rod built by a single rod builder to the specs and likes of the buyer. You simply cannot buy a custom made rod off the shelf of a store. Another thing is I never accepted the term "hand made" as ALL rods, mass production or custom, are indeed hand made. As far as I know there is no rod making machine invented so far. So , the important value of a Custom ma

I think it might be easier, better and cheaper if you could find a garage nearby that does car paint work. Most of them are usually friendly enough,(especially if they fish themselves), to make them with reasonable charges. The results done by a pro with his professional equipment would be perfect,(no dripping paint marks etc). Just tell them what kind of paint you 'd like.

Jared Hi, although i only use Tom's techniques as he describes them in the library I have this ''alternate" way which you can see in a video I came across the other day: Hope it helps you get started. I am sure if you try this simpler way you'll find Tom's ways easier to understand.

I am in search of some very specific fishing application blanks. This technique is slow trolling (1kt), with a 1kg finned weight, dragging live bait approximately one to two meters from the sea floor. Widely used in the Mediterranean and developed by the Italians which call it "Traina Piombo Guardiano". Lots of You-tube videos for anyone that wishes to find out more. With the Athens f

I find the revolver method works the best( transition done in 60 degree increments). I leave the 60 degree guide loose during the first static test and find where it wants to stand in order to place the line exactly in the middle above the guide foot. This way , It can produce a near perfect straight line running from the reel to the 180, with the standard placement of the 120 and 180.

I agree with Mike Adams, more often, Less is More. My advice to new rod builders would be to go ahead and try everything. Keeping in mind that if you don't experiment you never learn and it is through one's mistakes that one masters the art of rod building. Try to do a small step at a time and try to master well a certain technique before moving on to a new venture. Rod building is so very much r

Tom i also apologize for jumping in and asking another one. Some people say that if you use CP then the finish does not quite reach the blank satisfactorily. Thus they avoid using nylons and go only with colorfast thread. True or False?

Neil, I use the same technique, and also apply the glue epoxy on the tape ,as I turn the rod to build up to the required thickness. I recently had to turn an aluminum gimbal by about 10 degrees ,on a rod I built last year to match this rod on a friend's new rod holder. I could only describe the process of removing it as agonizing. This Fiberglass mesh becomes as solid as steel and also st

Hello Doug, I tried fixing a rod the way Roger described, if you decide to go by this way have in mind that after you apply the epoxy and slide the new blank onto the old piece you will be trapping and compressing air inside the new blank. This will be exerting an opposite force and they will be sliding away from each other. You will need to come up with a way to relieve this trapped air pressur

Thank you Gentlemen Your feedback is really valuable, I was thinking of painting it first in order to keep the figure of the blank around that area as slim as possible. I guess if it doesn't look good on the paint I can always apply an underwrap of white thread and thus cover the painted area. Shot to nothing sort of speak! Again thanks everybody for their input Regards

Ken I've been into their website ( BreakAway USA), and this lights seem to be somewhat bulky. Gave me another idea though, wrapping the little tube insert of the glow sticks , so that all one has to do is insert one whenever he needs to night fish. !!

Ken, Thanks for the info i will certailnly have a look into the BreakAway USA lights. The rewrap was not ment in order to generate "annual income" although the way I wrote it did. Custom rod building here is still Unknown to people. Our Island has 1 million people and I am the only custom rod builder around!! I do not make a living out of it , I am an airline Captain with Cyprus Airwa
