Maybe some day, but probably not. It would save a TON of confusion in the fly fishing world. I managed a fly shop for a little while and it gets crazy once fly line weight to rods comes up. It's like drinking and talking religion and politics.

I'm ordering it today. Can't wait to try it out. Tom, good point! They call it a 5 but I have a feeling it will be getting a 6 or 7 weight line depending on what model line I end up using. I am thinking I am going to try the new Liquid Crystal on the flats which has a long head/taper. Maybe a 7 SA Redfish for some short quick casts with bigger flies for bass. Thanks for all the information.

Another good point, Greg. I just know that the Predators I have had in the past are miserable to blind cast with. Way too short and stiff. This is also why I don't fish my TCX as much when blind casting in the passes and such. Way too much work. My SP 8 is the rod for me when a lot of casts are needed. I have a blast with the 5 that I built when targeting fish under 30" or so. Maybe I

Good point, I also have considered getting an MHX 6 and doing this. The thing is I can get the Xi3 for pretty much the same price as the MHX right now on a one time shot so my head is all screwed up :-)

Has anybody cast this rod, or own one? I gave it a shake test and have a feeling it is a little beast. I am getting ready to order a blank for some light duty saltwater use and wanted a little feedback. I have an 8 and it's a beast of a rod. I am just a little worried about the fact that it's only 8'9". Why would they do that? Will I lose any of the smoothness or distance? I built a M

Thanks for all the info. My computer has been down for a couple of days so I just saw the replies. Sounds like an RX8 might just be my next blank to try out.

Good to hear! I started reading up on it and it seems to be just what you guys stated, a big drawn out debate.

8. Spine
So, while building my rod, I was playing around with my Sages and a TFO and noticed that the guides seem to be wrapped on a 90 from the spine. Is this my imagination or does this sound right? It makes sense in a way because most people including me, at least when throwing shorter casts, seem to throw with the rod at a bit of an angle Am I correct? I ended up putting mine on the inside of the

Upon fishing my my MHX the last few nights I am now starting to get a good feel for it in different casting situations. That blank is really nice! I built a five for saltwater and my buddy now has a 7 wt. that is another amazing casting rod. My question is just out of curiosity for now and future reference. Which Rainshadow blank is closest to the MHX as far as response and stiffness goes. I

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks to all that have contributed to this forum. I am on my first rod right now and it is turning out great. I have been on this site reading for a couple weeks on and off and it has made things go very smooth while choosing parts and assembling this thing. I got an MHX 5 wt. blank and am building it for saltwater use. I got the grip and reel seat mounted up t

Makes sense. Is this a fairly new theory? Just curious as to why rod manufacturers have been stepping the sizes down the rod for so long. Is it an an aesthetics thing?

Very cool. This is why I started this thread. You guys have cleared up a week's worth of confusion for me! Now, one more thing. Russell mentioned above about going with just one stripper and the rest 2's. I think it would look pretty clean but do you think there would too much of a jump from say a 12 or 14 right to the 2's? Tom, you are correct about me not being up to speed on the tamers.

One more thing I forgot to ask is about the flexability of the Recoil guides. This has to affect casting and overall feel of a rod. I think I am going with snakes but for the stripping guide/tamer, you would think something rigid would be more sensitive to rod response, right?

Probably going to be a Rio Bonefish 90% of the time since I know that line pretty well and it is available in a 5wt. It's actually a six if you look at the grain weight but from what I have heard the MHX is pretty stout. I wouldn't mind leaving some options open for a shooting head setup though. Are you referring to the 7wt. BVK thread? I'll check it out. Thanks man!

This is exactly the kind of stuff I am looking to hear. I have been staring at catalogs for a week going nuts. I think I am getting a little warped from all the different things I am reading. @Tom, it doesn't necessarily have to be a 16 but I am thinking that is the way I am going to go. I like your reccomendations compared to the ones from Sage. Much more simple and sounds more efficient.

New guy here getting ready to build a 5wt. on an MHX blank for some lighter inshore saltwater fishing down here in Florida. I had pretty much decided to use Rec guides on my first rod build but now that I am down to the wire, I am starting to think twice. My BVK has Recoils, my Xi3 and TCX do not and I honestly can't tell any difference other than slight noise increase with the BVK when using a
