It was a very last minute thing. I was there delivering some rods one afternoon, and the owner at the shop was doing a little fishing seminar at his shop that night. He asked me if I would talk about rods, and rod construction for a few minutes. I basically just went over the differences in some different guide trains, and had a Microwave rod ready to cast against a GLoomis Greenwater. The Gr

Why not the Titans from American Tackle? They are titanium and really light. I use them a lot and never have any problems with them, great guides.

The Alps chuck is great. I have two of them. They will fit right on your current machine. Just bolt it on.

Dean,
I use single foot Recoil fly guides all the time on spinning rods. They are great, I have never had any problem with them. I don't have any experience with Hydras blanks, but I have been building on Phenix K2 blanks a lot lately. They are really sweet blanks, the lightest, most sensitive blank I have ever built on. A little Pricey though.

I have built a dozen or so rods with the Microwaves. I haven't ever tried adding a guide before it. How big is the spool on the reel your going to use? I know they look small, but I have tested these things with reels as large as a Shimano 6000. They worked great with it (with braid, I have not tries mono). I did move the first guide away from the reel a couple inches more though. I think T

Yeah, I am in the paint business. There are a lot more products out there than they have. If you have any paint, additives, or coatings questions you can give me a call anytime. My number is (239)560-8252.

10. Re: Made in USA
I built a whole set of rods with all USA made components for a customer. No, no one in the US makes ceramic ring guides that I have found. I use REC guides, And you have to use a REC tip. You can use graphite tubing for the handle, and you'll need a REC aluminum reel seat. Miami Thread Co. makes all of their thread here in the US, and there are plenty of epoxy manufacturers here.

Depends on the density of the cork. Really good AAA cork wont absorb as much as cheaper stuff. But, I would say that it will penetrate a couple mm. I havent had a problem with it. NGR stain is water thin, so it penetrates well. Most of the time I do a light sand with 180 grit before I stain so that everything stains fairly even.

Just with a rag. Do a couple sample pieces first. You will want to play around with your mix. It depends on what color, and NGR stain you use, but my guess it that you will want to cut it at least 200% depending on how transparent you want it.

Couple more things. NGR stain is closer to a dye, than a stain. Its colors are made with trans oxide pigments, rather than dyes. So, it will be much more colorfast than any dye. Dyes will dye cork too, but will fade almost immediately in the sun. Trans oxide pigment is much more stable, and much smaller than the regular organic pigment that's in most other stains. Any questions, let me know

I have had good success with staining cork. I own a large Benjamin Moore paint store, and my family has been in the coatings industry for 50 or more years. I have the ability to get my hands on literally every type of stain, or coating that exists. Alcohol based NGR stains will stain it well. You don't have to use any finish if you don't want to, but the color will "wash out" event

My vote is for AmTac titanium frames. I use a lot of those guides and have never had a problem.

16. Re: REC Guides
I build spinning rods with Recoils all of the time. I have never had any problems at all. Very light! I use American tackle light tops.
