used American tackle dryer kit for the real hardware, and some "C" channel for woodworking as the tracks. Thread carriage is home made.
I just remove the set screw on the dryer, and the chuck can be used as a free spinning hand wrapper as well. so far so good no slipping or "walking off" of the chuck.. plenty of storage for basic goodies, about 1.3 cubic foot.

Figured out how to pre design fly rod handles in google sketchup. I can see my "cut patterns", change colors, etc and get an almost exact look at the final product before I start turning. If you know the program, and want a copy of the file with both styles of grips, shoot me a private email.

I agree with Tom, you cant go wrong with Tru-Oil, or PermaGloss.
Those are my Favorites for wood finishes, Third choice would be a CA finish.

There are a few different ways.
dental rubber bands,
small surgical tubing cut into strips,
and masking tape, to name a few.
and I'm sure many others will have more ways to do it also.
sounds like what you're doing is just fine, and you will almost never get the guides aligned flawlessly while wrapping. There is always the "final tweaking" after you've gotten everything wra

Finding an all in one unit that youre looking for may be very difficult.
Personally I would tell you to buy independent tools for wood and metal working.
I have been turning wood and metal for years, and have used quite a few different lathes, currently my favorite mini lathe is my RIKON 12†X 16†wood lathe, very reasonable pricing with more than enough power for a lathe of its size,

23. Re: displays
Personally, I have always liked felt in contrasting colors to highlight the rods, but leaving the side walls dark stained wood.
I've become partial to dark greens and reds as contrast colors for background colors for bamboo rods
if you're doing wood as a background, just stain the wood a darker color to give a contrast to the color of the rod to let it stand out.
I would definately say go to

24. Re: rod wrappers
I agree totally with Jim,
I have 2 Pac Bay power wrappers and about the only time I use them "under power" is when I have to do very long under-wraps, or base wraps to save time and cramped fingers..
90% of the time I use them "by hand."
I started out with homemade hand wrappers years ago , and graduated into power wrappers when necessity dictated it, but still wrap &q

The easiest way I have come up with to find things that have hit the floor and vanished,
is to stretch a piece of pantyhose over the shop vac and vacuum, leave enough slack that it can go into the tube a few inches, and presto, you have an instant filter.
It works surprisingly well for picking up all sorts of things.

I use the Irwin 18" Drill bits, and cut them down to fit my needs, the shaft is actually a tiny bit smaller diameter than the actual drill cutting area, I have found that to be great for exhausting the excess material while drilling, and they are very durable and hold an edge great, they're in the 12-18$ range, never had a problem with them drilling off center if you just take it slow. the
