Is anyone familiar with the DEPENDON fishing rod brand? They operated in Canada in the 1920's thru the 60's. They started off making needles; then that turned into fish hooks... then lures, rods and reels - even fishing line. Does anyone know where I could find one of these rods? And were the rods ever made in England? ANy information at all would be helpful. Thanks, Brent

Hi Gary, Here's the contact information of the gentleman who needs the rods repaired. His name is Dr. Richard K. Wilson. One of the rods belonged to his father inlaw. Maybe you can talk to him about it. Thanks, Blessings, Brent

Hello all,
I've had an inquiry about repairing a couple of old Heddon rods that appear to be fiberglass. One of them has the old 'simulated bamboo' finish and the other is fiberglass (I think). They need the snake guides reattached on one, and a full set of guides on the other (all are missing except the tip-top). I work primarily on the old steel rods and I'm not set up with thread colors, etc

Thanks Tom... I might take a chance on the cork this time and call it independent study, but I'll bow to experience and purchase the Titan III to bond my own. Thank you; blessings on you and yours, and blessings to all on this site, Brent

Very good... here's the reason I asked. I stepped on some cheap (1/2 price) cork that's already bonded in the stack. I asked what adhesive they used and that was their answer. Is the Titebond III water-based glue?

Anyone heard of "Kaurit 234 from BASF" adhesive to bond cork rings? I'm told its a water based glue... any opinions? Or other suggestions in selecting a glue to bond cork? Thanks, Brent

"Cast all your cares, burdens and anxieties on Jesus, because he cares." 1 Peter 5:7
In Psalm 23, David writes... "He leads me beside the quiet waters, and
there he restores my soul". That was his medicine, and at the water was the place where he found restoration.
When life dealt Jesus a cruel blow and his good friend John was killed, it says... "By boat, Jesus w

Interesting ... I'll try that 'buff' with jean material idea. I know in wood lathe work they recommend burnishing the wood surface with a scrap piece of wood (same kind) to smooth it out, heat it up and create a patina. I do the same with a scrap piece of cork before I seal it.... something to try. Blessings to you, Brent

Thanks Owen, good advice. Sounds like one coat kind of melts into the other while its still somewhat wet; once it drys it starts doing its job of repelling! thanks again, Brent

I like the idea of removing it with a light sand... anything reworkable has to be an advantage. Not sure you get 'reworkable' with the clearcoat.

Can't argue with the price! ... Do you think its anything much different than a spray clearcoat? I'm attracted to the spray because it flows on evenly, and I like the look it produces.

I've seen cork sealer advertised... what purpose does it serve? And is it necessary? Does it add strengh? Longevity? Stain protection? Does it affect grip - enhance gripping power? Or is it just to improve the looks of the cork? Or is it just something else to sell.

Hey Tyler,
I've restored allot of those old steel rods. You can usually bend them back by sighting down the length of the rod and making slow careful adjustments. The square ones sometimes have some twist to them. Those can also be twisted back by using smooth jawed crescent wrenches.

Is there a particular adhesive used to bond agate inserts?

Hello all,
I'm interested in possibly building my own line guides with agate inserts. I see where agate inserts are advertised to be sold separately. Does anybody know...
A) Are agate inserts bonded and / or crimped in place in the lineguide frames? And is there special tooling available to do this?
B) Does anyone know a source for purchasing the frames only... to install agate inserts int

Thanks Larry, I had seen some lineguides advertised as 'german silver' that had a mirror finish with a gold cast to it ... shiney enough to shave in! Looked more like gold than silver to me.

Very good. Now let me display my ignorance... what exactly is german silver? It looks more like gold plating to me.

Hey Guys,
I'm looking for tip tops in german silver frames for casting rods. Any ideas? (approx #8 with 5.5-6.0 tube size)
I'm also interested in german silver tip tops, or nickle silver tip tops with amber agate inserts (or any other stone inserts) in the same size. Any help / ideas are appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Mike, Carl,.. that's great information. I sure appreciate it.
I know it adds weight, and they're expensive (new or vintage). But there's nothing quite like a nickle silver agate guide to set off a nice vintage restoration. It makes a 'great' rod into an 'awesome' rod. I keep telling myself 'there's just not that many guides on a rod!' to justify the expense! I've transplanted the vin

Does anyone have any experience with the 'natural stone' inserts offered in nickle silver guides?... That's the closest thing I can find to new, never used 'agate-like' inserts.
Are the natural stone inserts as tough as the agate guides?...or prone to damage / cracking, etc? Are they even the same caliber material? Is that a fair comparison putting the stone inserts in the same category as the

I'm getting the hang of it now... the metallic just presented a greater challenge at first, being 'slippery' and all. I did notice that the beginning of the thread on the spool had a greater tendency for the foil to unravel from the core, but as I used down on the spool the problem of twisting and unraveling pretty much went away.
Here's another question though... I used nylon size A for the

Thanks Mike, ...admittedly I'm a major amateur, but I'm learning fast ! thanks to the good people on this site that have allot of experience. Certainly didn't mean to slight the FishHawk name. There was some discussion on brand names, so I felt compelled to offer what I was using. Thanks again
