Made from stuff laying around the garage, this thing cuts oak. I did have to pay $1.29 for the threaded rod so it was cheap, not free. 1/2" chuck and only 600 RPM so it's got some snort. Reversing, but only one speed, hence the router speed control which takes it down to zero. Works better than I expected.

The symbol is called an Ichthus and it originated as a secret symbol of early Christians and still used today. Mudhole has the ichthus symbol on a rodskin that you could use, or if you want to do a search elsewhere you now know it's correct name.

I suspect that Maryann is referring to fading. Yes it fades. Silver and gold not as much as darker colors. Blue metalic wraps on one of my rods is silver on top and only a year and a half old. the threads were cp'd

7. Re: Kids Rod
When my grandkids wanted "Grandpa built" rods at ages of 4 and 6 I chose to not spend huge bucks on rods for kids that live around Chicago and almost never get to fish. I instead, bought two Pflueger trigger spin combos for $40 each. 25 for the reel and 15 extra for the rod. They turned out to be very nice IM6 combos for the price, even had limp, low memory line. I stripped them, painte

Tom,
What is the locator float that you are using? I searched around yesterday but found zero. I like the concept.
Thanks Jeff Frei

the fusion can says recoat in 24 hours or after 7 days. "Chip resistant after 7 days." this stuff needs to cure. I've had Fusion wrinkle up on two rods because I didn't wait the whole 7 days before clear coating with Helmsman. I don't use Fusion much anymore. My "go to" baitcaster rod that I beat the lake half to death with is painted with Rustoleum charcoal metalic and Helm

I use the Yorker caps for my epoxy and I cut them down until my syringes fit into them. Invert the bottle /syringe and draw out whatever you need, with no mess.
I just weighed new 2oz. bottles of epoxy. The hardener weighed 1.77 oz and the resin 2.20 oz. so there is a definite difference in weight. Enough to make a difference? Don't know, but it will harden given enough time. I've purposely

I've done a couple of builds with the TM1 and I really like this stuff. Easy on with the squirt bottle and soft oxhair brush to level it, easy clean up with water, crystal clear and sets up fast. I have had an extra thick coat around a hook keeper turn cloudy but that has cleared up. Maybe a curing issue? don't know Sorry, but I didn't pay any attention to how long it took. It does seem to me

Mark, these are all good tips. I donated a Wisconsin Badgers theme rod to my local sports club to raffle off and now the whole club knows that I build. It was not my intention because I am just a hobbiest with no desire to start a rod business. The club is headquartered out of the only bar on the lake that I fish and I told the bar owner that no one has to know that I built this. Fine. At the las

Roger, sounds like you're set up pretty well. As a hobbiest I can live with what I have now, but I can see myself buying a smaller 3 jaw chuck in the future. I didn't get the bed extension thinking that if I needed the extra length I can make a stand with rollers (steady rest) to clamp on my bench. My brother is a very skilled machinest and if I need something really cool I can call on him, other

I bought one a couple of weeks ago. Don't forget the 20% coupon- good for another $38 off. I got mine for $152 + shipping of 7bucks. Got a 4 jaw and a MT drill chuck. It's solid and quiet. Speed change is very easy, some guys complain but I can't see why. Takes a timed minute to change speeds. Centers line up perfectly by eye. No complaints yet.

Mine were obviously seconds. Three of the five needed lots of leveling and one has a noticable curve to it (1 1/2"). But you get what you pay for. I'm happy with them. 5 blanks for under a hundred bucks, hard to beat. I've built two of them so far and they work just fine. The CRB blanks that I've ordered in the past were much nicer in appearance and still pretty cheap.

17. Re: Epoxy Finish
Flame? I use a low wattage (60W) spot light from my recessed kitchen lights in an automotive trouble light with the cage removed. Point it at the area that you want to heat and it does just that. I put my hand behind the rod to feel how hot it's getting, (you just want it warm - too hot, it will drip) but with only 60w there's not too much danger of overheating like if you were use a 150w drivewa

Had a similar problem, but with a lost tip section of a friend. As stated, give them a call or email.
Jeff,
We do sell tip sections but yes I will need more information.
Thanks,

19. Re: Reamers
What is the advantage of the reverse drill bits? I understand the concept of running a tapered reamer with spiral abrasive strips in reverse but I can't figure out why a reverse drill bit would work better than a standard Irwin.

20. Re: Old Rods
I have learned from this site and successfully removed reel seats by submerging them in boiling water. Leave the handle on to get a grip, then twist and pull.

They're calling it "slip on underwrap" which means it's for dragonscales and there is probably pics in the photo area. Might be better than the drywll tape that I've been using. It comes in silver or gold so I suppose you could just epoxy right over it with no overwrap if you wanted to.

I love success stories like this and am anxious to watch you continue to grow. Thank you for the great service that you have given me in the short time that I have been building.
Congratulations Mudhole and good luck in the future.

I looked at my first rod the other day and started laughing. I was SO proud of that thing when I got it done. I don't fish with other rod builders who would know how bad it is, so I won't rebuild it. It's a great reminder of where my skill level once was.

Ken, I found out today, that I'm looking for the same thing. I checked the Merrick book and that o-ring ferrule looks fine, but Merrick is a wholesaler and I'm not in business. Do you sell Merrick items?

Also, for spiral guides, I searched "degree wheel" free download and printed out an automotive degree wheel about 4" in diameter. I made red lines at 0, 60, 120, and 180 degrees. I put a 1/4" hole in the middle along with 4 radial cuts to form rod gripping fingers. I line up the 0 mark with the reel seat and rotate the rod until the 60 is vertical and mark the rod, repeating t

I talked to a rod builder last weekend at a fishing expo in Wisconsin and he told me that he just uses an old fly rod blank. Slides it down through all the guides, butt to tip. If you really need a tool, you can't get much simpler than that.

29. just curious...
Just curious and making notes for next years expo. How do the guys that fly in, and buy one piece blanks at the expo get them home in one piece? Will the vendors package and ship or are you left to your own resources? I've seen what baggage handlers can do a suitcase.
Thanks, Jeff
