One solution that I have adopted from watching others using some of the larger lathe chucks, due the disappearing act that ensues when spinning at a high speed, as Billy has experienced, is to wrap a colored athletic wrist band over the chuck. I can pull it toward the head while chucking up a piece of wood, then pull it over the chuck head and jaws before start up. The colored band lets me know

I looked up my colors and I was mistaken, as others pointed out, the Garnet is the color to use not the maroon.

I did a rod a few years ago for my wife, a Hokie graduate, and the Gudebrod maroon and orange, with CP looked great. I used a brown blank. Got her into fishing with me with that one. She really enjoys it.
I always though a Hokie was a neutered turkey?

I use the gold and silver enamel all the time for blank inscriptions. Use a very fine point on the caligraphy pen, and don't attempt to write the whole inscription with only one dip of the pen. I typically shake the paint real good for a few minutes to get the pigment in solution, then take the cap off, using what is in the cap for my ink well. If anyone is interested in a Custom Power Wrapper, there is a "used" model in the bargin section of Cabela's in Kansas City. It had some minor scratches along the bed ( a two part bed), but it had a wrapping motor and a drying motor, several rod supports, appeared to be fairly complete.
