Les, you got my attention. In my painting room I have an exhaust fan that pulls a ton of air, and so when people open the door to the open the pollen and dust is forced in. So I am adding doors and sealers to separate rooms to make sure the air has a "channel" and is nowhere near the finishing room. THANKS, LES!

Would airborne laquer thinner from the airbrush be the culprit?

Thanks, Roger. I do know that the building is not well insulated and we have had a few days of rain and high humidity. I run a dehumidifier, but with opening and closing the door, the humidity is pretty high. Most epoxies say that when mixed correctly, they will set regardless of humidity. Has anyone had experience otherwise in high humidity?

Ha! Came home and recoated. Smooth as glass. So now I know I have something in my building, most likely from the fish mounting. I will continue the hunt and keep the two separate until I discover the cause. Thanks all for your help.

Thanks. I always use disposable sticks and cups, but sometimes I change brands without giving it any thought. I use high quality brushes and clean with epoxy cleaner and soap and water. I am using the same setup that I have used for 15 years and I had only one issue, about a decade ago, and that was a problem with me not mixing the exact ratios right (I wasn't paying attention). So to have this p

Well, I applied to a spare blank and ended up with the same results. So there is a contaminant rampant somewhereI do fish mounts in adjacent rooms, so it may be from one of those mediums, though I cannot think of any that have silicon or oil. Soooo, I will remove rod from this setting, try with same cups, brushes, and mixing sticks and see if the contaminant is in the room. thanks for all of the

So a couple of weeks ago, I asked about a finish problem I was having where my entire finish was fisheying all over the blank...hundreds of them. I have never in the past 10 years had a problem with finish. I worked on tweaking air circulation, possible contaminants, and rod prep. I even opened a new finish to eliminate that possibility. All seemed fine. Next rod, 3rd coat blows up again. Arg.

Ha! I think I found the culprit. Pearl-Ex Powders. I use them all the time, but until recently never in the same location. They become airborne very easily, and I noticed the fish-eyes all surrounded a tiny particle. Time to separate them!

I do a lot of molding and it could be that the latex molding material somehow crossed over into that room. It is a liquid so I don't really know how it would become airborne.

Hi everyone,
I have not had a finish problem in about 10 years, but I have always coated in the same room. I recently moved into a new room with my rod building stuff and I had an entire finish coat fall apart--it fish eyed the entire length of the rod with 10-15 major fish eyes on every wrap. Oddly enough, it was about the 3rd coat. I cleaned vigorously after the terrible finish set, lightly

On my GLX, 9', 4wt, 2 piece, the 6th guide is at 37.5" from the tip.
On a 3 piece, it,s the same, which puts it just below the ferrule... odd. They can't do that on their production rods, can they?

I am building a Loomis IMX 3 4 weight piece (9 ft. F1084) and to begin my spacing of guides, I thought I'd begin by placing the guides temporarily on the marks suggested by Loomis. The sixth guide down, according to their suggestions, falls just below the ferrule. Is this just a mismeasurement on their part? I can't imagina not having that guide be 1/2" higher and be on the bottom of the

I like to fish a long blank for trout in the surf, but my current 8' rod is just a little too stiff. I lost a few big fish this year beacuse the tip is not soft and hooks simply pulled. I am looking for a good 8 1/2' to 9' blank on which I can build a rod that can chunk a Mirrolure a mile but has a tip soft enough for effectively fishing these twitch and crankbaits without pulling them out. I

I fish a lot in the surf in and sound in NC, throwing mostly artificials for reds, spanish, trout. I have a great rod that I built for throwing jigs and light baits, but I need a longer rod for throwing Mirrolures, stingsilvers, heavier (1/2 oz. plus) jigs, Top Dawgs... things that stretch my 7' rod too far. I was speaking with Andy Dear about the 8 or 81/2 Salmon/steelhead rods, but most of th

I've had a request for a telescoping flippin' stick that will be 6' long when compacted (so it will fit in a rod locker). Does anyone know of any blanks this short when compacted (most are 7').
Thanks,
Dan
