David,
I do this alot here in Wisconsin (steelies and browns) all year, and I am currently planning on building myself a new rod for drifting spawn sacs / yarn flies. I believe this rod would also work for casting spoons from the piers. The blank is a ST. Croix SC106MLF2. For 6-10# line, it has a 0.475 butt, 4 tip and weighs 3.4 ounces. This should do you quite nicely for your needs.

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone here has an idea on how to enlarge the grip on a reel seat. I have a ten and one half foot spinning rod that I use for salmon/trout that I build with a Fuji NSP size 16 reel seat. Unfortunately, when I grip the reel seat (usually with the reel stem between my index and middle finger), I find the seat uncomfortably small and tiring. I've thought of cork tape and ma

Darrell,
While not an experienced fly fisherman by any strectch of the imagination, I have built and fished an eight foot two weight rod on a blank that I bought from Dan Craft. I put it together for right around 80 dollars. I find it a joy to fish with using a two weight line for bluegills etc. Haven't hooked anything larger on it though, and definitely not fought anything in a body of wat

Tim,
You know, I just don't get the need for the long butt grip. Whenever I have fished with rods that have an extended rear grip, I found it cumbersone and difficult to switch the position of the rod because that darn rear grip keeps hanging up on my shirt/jacket and poking me in the gut. So when I build a rod, I put a short (5") rear grip on, and a long foregrip (11"). This work

Hi,
How do you handle this situation. I have a blank that I want to start building on, but I've noticed that I have a very thin splinter separating from the blank and running about 11/2 inches from the top. Do I break it off, glue it back on or leave it as is and put a tip top on it? I'm guessing that glue would be the choice, but which glue? I wouldn't trust five minute expoxy, to rigid.

Hi,
After making about a dozen spinning rods, mostly for steelhead, I've decided that it is time to enter into the mysterious world of fly fishing. I've a couple of SC IV fly blanks (old style) that I would like to use, but I need some advice - in particular, about the reel seat. Living in Wisconsin where the weather tends to be on the cool side, I would like to have reel seats that will not
