First rod from start to finish (Had previously built rod in class with Al Goldberg, but he did the finishing). Was a kit that I had received before I took the class and pretty pleased with how it turned out. Can't wait to make next rod and do it better.

Don: For the 8' rod, casting bucktails, with a Penn Slammer 460 would seem like the 30 set is more appropriate......lower, smaller guides.....the 50 would seem to be too high, guides too big.....don't you think?

Have never used the microwave system but would like to. What would be the right size (and how many guides) for an 8' Surf rod (St. Croix Ben Doerr Surf System SS80M), used primarily on a boat for casting 1 - 2 oz bucktails with a Penn Slammer 460 reel......Also, are there guide placement instructions online? Thanks, Steven

I find that when I use black sharpie over filed down guide feet, it comes off as soon as I handle it or start to wrap over it. I have let it dry overnight, applied Sally Hansen clear over it, but still doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

One of the reasons to do this is that it makes the overwrap go a little easier, since you are wrapping over a hardened surface. Also, it ensures that the under wrap is completely epoxied, which may not happen if it is only epoxied after the guide wrap is completed. I am a beginning rod builder and have done it both ways and, assuming I have the time, think it works better with epoxying the under

Got lucky and received a ton of rod building stuff from an older builder who just wanted to give them away: Pac Bay wrapper, thread, etc. The real finds I think are several blanks, wondering about the specs for them: Fenglass SP 846 (White) Fenglass SS 1323 (Honey) Fenglass SS 1201 (Honey) Lami MB 963M (Honey) Thanks, Steven

On a recent wrap, found that using Fish Hawk red metallic frayed consistently as single thread inlay or other pull through. Will have to try Pro Wrap or Anton Metallics.

Just got mine from Donart, a great sponsor from the Left! Very nice tool and works well. Placed order on Sunday and received it on Tuesday. They have a very reasonable sliding scale rate for shipping that made it worthwhile. Thanks to Capt. Neil for the recommendation and to Donart for the great service. Will definitely order from them again.

Donart has them and their shipping charges are much less for smaller items. Ordered one on Capt. Neil's recommendation, looking forward to receiving it and trying it out.

Any other sponsors besides Swampland have this tool? It looks great and I would be glad to buy it from Swampland but shipping is almost 3 times the cost of the item itself........

If you have the opportunity, take a rod building class. I was fortunate to have the chance to take a class with a well known rod builder here in East Hampton,NY - Al Goldberg - and it was a great experience. If no formal classes around, find out if there are any builders that live in your area - that is a question you can post here. Even so, you will still have tons of questions that can be answe

Looking for a blank that is similar to the discontinued St. Croix Ben Doerr Surf System SS80M.......(SCII Graphite, Medium Power, Mod Fast Action.......6-17 lb line, up to 2 oz lure). Particularly looking for a blank with a similar firm tip, which makes it ideal for casting 1 oz - 1 1/2 oz bucktails for stripers. Thanks, Steven

I use Aftcote for rod building....3 thin coats, and am happy with it and have never used anything else. Been doing more repairs recently - replacing guides, tip top wrap and wondering what more experienced builders than I use for a single coat epoxy that dries quick enough to get my friends back fishing as soon as possible. Thanks, Steven
