THANKS everyone for the great suggestions. I ended up mounting the threads toward the butt end as that felt the best during mockup.
Epoxy is curing now so I'll be able to hold it in my hand tomorrow.
This website is a fantastic resource for information! A huge THANKS to Tom also!

Being somewhat of a beginner I have a stupid question:
Is there a better orientation for the reel seat on a spinning rod? One store-bought rod I have has the screw adjust toward the tip of the rod the other has it toward the butt. The last spinning rod I built I put the nut and moving portion of the reel seat toward the tip since it seemed like it would be less likely to peel the reel out ot

I'm wanting to build a tarpon rod using a MHX MU96MH blank. (8' Medium heavy, 15-40lb line, 9 tip, .7 butt.) I want to try and order everything to get this rod built as time is running short for the fishing trip but I'm having trouble figuring out what size to make the guide closest to the reel. If I use the suggested guide spacing in the MHX for planning purposes it doesn't really tell me

I have used the oil based model airplane paint, usually black and it seems to work fine.

Does anyone have a recommendation or any experience with using a paint pen to write on a blank?
To write something like "CUSTOM BUILT FOR JOHN DOE".
Thanks in advance for your time.

I have been using the Bass Pro Shops XPS Fluorocarbon for quite some time with excellent results. I use it on my lipless crankbait rod as well spinnerbait and on one of my 'finesse' flipping stick's because the sensitivity is great (MHX HM-MB874-MHX blank and Fuji Titanium "K" Concept SiC Guides)
Never had a fish break off (knock on wood!!) and I change line once each year which work

I built a split grip flippin' and pitchin' stick using the MHX HM-MB874-MHX blank and Fuji Titanium "K" Concept SiC Guides. With fluorocarbon line the sensitivity is NICE!!!!
It isn't a GLoomis GLX but is feels pretty slick.

Thank you for the fast responses!
No problem on the fly blank, I want to build one of those too.
Thank you again!

Please excuse my lack of rod building experience!
I'm looking for a blank recommendation for an ultralight spinning rod for small stream trout fishing, lightest most sensitive possible.
I have been building several bass rods, all high modulus casting rods. Can I build a spinning rod on a casting blank?
Thanks in advance for any help!

This is FUNNY!
The 2011 was my first show but it won't be my last. I think I want to go every year now!
I think I'm hopelessly lost in rod building, I don't think I'll ever buy another manufactured rod. They just don't cut the mustard any more.
Thanks to everyone for a wonderful time! (I spent too much money though...)

I'm a novice builder having only build a dozen or so rods over the past 6 years but here is what I have learned:
Mud Hole has a section in their catalog on "How to build a rod" which covers the basic principles.
Get a book like the Rod-Building Guide by Tom Kirkman (I liked this one)
I think there may be some good videos out there although I haven't bought any.
My first 3 rods were

I tape a 3/4" x 3/4" x 6" long piece of wood to the reel seat. This helps to instantly see at a distance if the rod is twisted. Then eyeball down the blank and check to see that the guides are straight up.

Do I still need to use a color preserver Gudebrod HT metallic thread?
Thanks in advance, the information I've collected on RodBuilding.Org has saved my projects many times.

I am new to this whole rod building thing but I am impossibly hooked on it now. I'm ordering stuff right and left and have a question about thread.
I have replaced the guides on two rods using NCP 'A' thread but I read that Nylon is stronger. Should I be using nylon on these flipping sticks?
THANKS!
