Can anyone tell me WHERE to get the one inch roller bearing wheels with rubber o-rings to build my own rod wrapper? The only source I've found is Shoff's (wheels only) and he is out of them and doesn't know when they'll be in. thank you John Re: Roller Bear Wheel for rod wrapper

Try your local hardware store, for screen door rollers, or screen shop. Most large stores also carry O rings. Half the cost. Thats how I made my stand, and also cork lathe. Re: Roller Bear Wheel for rod wrapper

Thanks Vaughn! I thought about using screen door rollers, but wondered about how they would wear and if they would remain true after using for a while. How did you mount them-small threaded bolt? Re: Roller Bear Wheel for rod wrapper

There are lots of options. In line skate wheels work very well but are sort of large unless you are doing larger saltwater rods. The rolling casters from dishwasher racks come supplied with bearings. The rollers used on closet doors aren't bad. Re: Roller Bear Wheel for rod wrapper

The bearings alone from the in-line skate wheels (which you can buy in packages without the wheels) make perfect rod rollers. You just place your own o-rings over them. I've used these on all the roller-bearing supports I have along my three lathe beds. They work for everything from regular hand wrappers to high-speed turning for cork work. Have been using mine for about 4 years, no problems. The O rings in time will dry out & crack, will need to be replaced. You can buy glass slidig door rolls which have bearings. I did use ones with bearings for my cork lathe because of the speed, & nonbearing for hand wrapping. Also found nylon bushings for rollers so I could use #10/ 10/32 machine screws, with aircraft lock nuts. If you cant find bushings, use nylon washers, to roller clear of your mounting bracket, so they will not bind up Re: Roller Bear Wheel for rod wrapper

John,
I don't mean to take any business away from any of the site's sponsors and they all sell wonderfully appropriate products that will provide you with many years of grief free service, but I can respect your efforts to build your own equipment, just like making your own rods. I have gone down the same route you are going down right now. I have not been very hapy with the slop found in most sliding door rollers, nylon screen door glides, etc. Let me give you a big clue... aircraft cable guides purchased in surplus stores. If it ain't good enough to put in the sky and risk your life with, it ain't good enough for your rod lathe. They come in different sizes for different sized cables and cost about $2-3.00 each. Slip some o-rings on them and you're set. I just moved houses and my computer at home is not set up, so can't post a link for the Do It Yourselfers. Email me again in another week or two and I will send you more info. Goodluck Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
