butt cap ideas needed

I'm tired of the same ole black rubber butt caps. What are some ideas and methods for custom made butt caps? I do have a Delta Midi Lathe, but what would be some good woods to make caps from? What other materials are used to make custom butt caps?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I made a butt cap for a long spinning rod out of a copper pipe cap. I ground it down a bit to square it off and polished it up pretty like, then sealed it with epoxy. I engraved the owners name in the end, came out real nice. A bit heavy, however, but on the rod I built, it actually helped the 'feel'.

Good Luck!

Hardwood butt caps are a good idea. I have made many. You'll want to cap the very end of the wood butt cap with some sort of rubber insert or plug to protect the very bottom of it. Use your imagination here.

Another good idea is to pick out a nice piece of figured wood and make both a butt cap and a foregrip hosel. A matching set. Adds a nice touch to any rod and does not interfere with rod performance or durability in any way.

And don't forget about all the various materials available in the pen maker's catalogs.

Hey Steve,
Angler's Workshop has a solid rubber ring that I have been using with great luck. Not very expensive and I think looks nicer than a cap.
