Trouble finding the spine on a 5 piece rod
Posted by: Harry Hoots (---.nc.us.ibm.com)

Purchased a 5piece Forecast 4wt the other day, and am in the process of building my first rod. Having troubles finding the spine in the lower 2 or 3 sections of the rod. Tried several different methods to find it, but I cant tell any difference in the way each piece bends.

Anyone have any info related to this? Is this an often occurance, or am I perhaps not doing something right??

Thanks,
Harry

I dont think the spine matters as much on the lower sections.

Harry,

Some blanks you can look down the inside of the blank and see a difference in the wall thickness. This seems to be true on St.Croix III and IV blanks. When you think you have found the spine on the lower sections put the rod togeather and re-check the spine. I agree with the previous statement .... unlikely to make much difference on the lower sections.

Regards,
Dennis

I have done 3 rods that were 5 or 6 piece. so my experience is limited. I was able to find the spine pretty easily with a spine finder made from 2 ball bearings and a short length of pvc pipe. But a lot of the section is inside the spine finder. I found the best spine on each piece, then assembled the piecies in pairs and fiddled with it a little until I seemed to have the apparant spines lined up.
