Mortising Reel Seat Inserts

Quick question on reel seat inserts. When you turn one that is larger in diameter than your hoods or machined rings, and must be mortised to fit the reel foot and line up with the top and bottom hood/ring, how are most of you doing this? I have been trying a few different ways with success, but it definitely is a tedious task to accomplish and look flawless. I made a jig for the seat to sit in and use my router to cut the groove, but it is difficult to get the radius on the bottom of the groove. I've also cut the seat lengthwise to the proper depth and have chiseled and carved the groove. I know Phil Ptak does this quite a bit. Whattaya say Phil or anybody else? Thanks!! There is a special router bit to do this. Contacvt Andy Dear or on of the other board sponsor. Or, you can use Strble reel seats, which do not require a mortise. Re: Mortising Reel Seat Inserts

Thanks Steve. I will contact Andy about the bit. I don't think any reel seat insert needs a mortise if it isn't larger in diameter than the skeleton that attaches to it, but I like the chunky look of a custom turned insert for certain types of rods. Thanks again for the info.. John Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
