OK, I did a search but didn't exactly find the information I am looking for- so thanks in advance for answering. Here goes: 1) What is the rule for length of ferrule wraps in a salmon-steelhead weight flyrod? How long should they be- as long as where the end of the male ferrule will be when the pieces are together, longer, not as long, etc? 2) When you are wrapping these types of rods, do you make a double wrap of thread, or is one sufficient? Lots of epoxy, or just a normal amount? 3) Does the rule for the length of your ferrule wraps change when you are building a light or medium trout rod? Thanks a lot for the great info- by the way, the tapered thread wrap turned out great. Thanks for the suggestions. My girlfriend will be pleased with her new rod (if she gets it!) The important part of the ferrule reinforcing wraps is how close it is to the very edge of the ferrule. This is the only place where a split-out is likely to occur. For a general rule of thumb, I make my ferrule wraps twice the length of the diameter at the ferrule opening. You could make it a bit shorter and still get the job done, and you could make it longer and not really harm anything. I chose the ratio I did simply to give me a standard and provide a pleasing appearance as I moved up the rod to ferrules that were smaller in diameter. The key thing is to try and get the wrap as close to the edge as you can (as close as 1mm and not more than 2mm) and make it a snug wrap, especially at the edge. You do not want it so tight that you actually constrict the ferrule opening, but it should be a bit more snug than your guide wraps. One layer of thread is sufficient and finish as you would your guide wraps. Most companies do build in some internal ferrule reinforcement, but most that I talk to still recommend a ferrule reinforcement wrap on all tip-over-butt female ferrules, and on both male and female ferrules in the spigot type. ................
