I have a fishing partner asking me to look into making him a flyrod for trout, panfish and bass. What weight blank should I look for, and if any recommendations on a good budget friendly blank. He's 17, and I don't want to be out of pocket too much, as I'm sure I will probably cover part of it. Re: What weight fly rod?

Can't compete on the budget front
But the CTS Vintage #5 will be great. Herb CTS Re: What weight fly rod?

Look at the lower end Batson Lineup. They will take a lot of abuse and are very forgiving. They will take a lot of abuse that a beginner will unintentionally give it. Re: What weight fly rod?

I think a 5 or even 4wt is the most fun for those species. 5wt can still throw bass poppers easily. Re: What weight fly rod?

I would steer you towards an 8-1/2 footer in a 5 or 6-weight. Only difficulty will be finding an 8-1/2 footer. The 9-footers are the most popular but your fishing partner may find the 8-1/2 footer easy to use over a full day.

I'd go 5 wt. Not sure if NFC July 4 deals are now over, but they were ridiculous and hard to pass up. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
