MHX Light Saltwater issues

Hi - I recently had one of these break above the grip when i caught bottom. Was only using 10lbmainline with 15lb fluoro and snapped when i let line out and tried to reel back down to try and pop the hook. I have built a handful of these and am worried about this issue with the rods i have sold.

Have any of you had issues with this line or other MHX blanks? Is this most likely a one off issue or is there a history with these blanks?

It wouldn't surprise me if the braid you used and the leader both broke well above their line rating, some of the lines we have tested broke at twice their line rating, this is also true of mono, Trilene XT 14 lb. actually broke at 22+ lbs. The rod sounds like it broke in the right location, just above the fore grip. You learned a good lesson, don't use your rods to break off from the bottom or pull your gear free, this applies to all types of line.

Ok. Ya i didnt put much pressure on it. Have gotten plenty of other hooks out of bottoms doing more. Was pretty surprised it broke, but sure.

I’ve never had any issues with MHX blanks and I have several.

These are some of my favorite blanks and hold up very well. ( and I'm pretty tough on my gear). I wouldn't worry about issues with other builds. Sounds like this rod may have suffered some type of trauma that weakened it in that spot. It's not uncommon for hooks attached to hook keepers right above the grips to eventually scratch and score the blank in that area making it ( and any other blank) prone to a failure under load.

Thank you for choosing MHX blanks, and we're truly sorry to hear about your experience with the broken rod. It is frustrating, especially after the work you've put into building them. MHX blanks are generally well-regarded for their quality and performance, but like any product, there can sometimes be anomalies or one-off issues. It's also possible that the breakage could be due to a defect in the blank or an error during the building process, such as a stress point near the grip. Since you've built a few rods, it might be worth revisiting the building technique or checking if others have experienced similar issues with the same model.

We understand how disappointing this can be. The good news is that MHX offers the best and only transferable warranty in the industry. With millions of MHX blanks sold, our warranty claims are less than 1%, which speaks to our commitment to quality.

Building rods for over 45 years, I can say that Mud Hole is a stand up company. Recently had an issue from shipping , after noticing damage from shipping , they made the warranty so simple and quick I was shocked. Best company I have had the pleasure to deal with.

Fishing is not a matter of life or death, it's much more important than that
