broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

Hello folks,
turning a 2-pc rod to separate sections, solid carbon ferrule came out from butt section. It was glued with some yellow glue, about 30 years old. Unfortunately butt secton edge has crackled too. I'd try to repair it with epoxy and tightening edge with some kind of metal ring to apply constant pressure during curing time, then place tight nylon wrap to strenghten the edge and, obviously, epoxy again. Is this a good method? Many thanks Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/23/2024 06:33AM by Gianmaria Vigo. Re: broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

Yes.
I would use West System Gfex650 epoxy. Remove excess. Wrap with plastic wrap. Use small hose clap over plastic wrap. Herb CTS Re: broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

Many thanks man. I see it's a very strong epoxy for marine and stressful repair works. Thanks for this advice too Re: broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

The strength of the epoxy won't be your issue.

Thanks Tom,
I can read it's a very strong epoxy... before now I only knew the "usual" Pro Kote and Flex Coat for wrapping purpose and U-40 Rod Bond for grips and reel seats. Glad to hear there is something more technical foir my purpose! Thanks for your advices Gianmaria Re: broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

Ferrule fixed with 650 epoxy (is a variant of 655)... also available locally (Italy) from nautical gear shops.
I'm impressed by its strenght, really! Its consistency remembers of U-40 Rod Bond but is stronger and less/non-elastic. Also suitable for any kind of repair purposes. Thanks to everyone for this wonderful tip! Gianmaria Re: broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

It's great that you can get the West System Gflex 650 in Italy.
I use it for all my structural work. Do you ever use Gatti blanks for your rod building? I used to use them a lot before I discovered CTS. Herb Re: broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

I would wrap and epoxy over the repair or you probably will break again Re: broken spigot - HELP NEEDED

The epoxy wasn't and isn't the issue. Any common liquid or gel epoxy is strong enough for this provided the assembly is properly fitted and prepared. If the male section is cracked it will need to be trimmed back a slight bit and wrapped over as Robert suggested.

@Herb
Yes I did (fly fishing ones) but they are also known for being weak and delicate, I have a pair of spinning Gatti blanks here at home which have been broken in the reel seat zone, won't buy one for me... Agree - the Gatti's are problematic re breakage. I once cracked a female ferruleby just spining it. And the ferrule had original tape on it from factory. Herb Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
