Jig rod (1/2 3/4) for long cast in open water.

What are the top of the line blank. Thanks

Hello Jim, In case you don't know, this site is owned by North Fork Composites, so any blank they deem acceptable for your
need is the best blank. But, if this was 1974 I could easily suggest any blank by SKY-LINE GRAPHITE because they were cutting edge in graphite rods used on the B.A.S.S. tour of that era. I wouldn't doubt that some or all of the mandrels from those rods are still being used by someone with current materials for the past fifty years.

Best is a subjective rating based not only on the blanks but on the expectations of the evaluator. For example, best toughness? best sensitivity? longest casting? lowest weight? nicest finish? best warranty? glossy vs matte, painted vs not painted? best customer service?

In my opinion, you get about what you pay for in blanks. The more expensive they are, the higher the power to weight ratio, the higher the TNF (True Natural Frequency), the higher the sensitivity. However, the more expensive they get the smaller the gain for each dollar added, so I look for that "sweet spot" where the added functional value for each dollar added starts to decline. Where that "sweet spot" is depends on your budget and your expectations.

From the MHX line you could probably get away with the NMB873.5 for both applications, it's really a fantastic and multi purpose rod. Light, sensitive and strong.

I tend to throw 1/2 oz spinnerbaits with the 873.

This board is sponsored by many blank manufacturers. NFC is one but by no means the only one. All of them make exceptional blanks for your purpose.

I'd be looking hard at the following blanks:
From NFC:
- Xray SJ725 or SJ765 (just depends on the length you want)
- Xray SJ736 (lighter than the others, probably too light if your total weights approach 1oz)

From Point Blank:
- PB731MHXF
- PB761MHF

James,
CTS is a premium blank from New Zealand.
What lengths are you considering.

I use the same blank for jigs, spinnerbaits, small swimbaits, really any stout single hook lures… a heavy 7’ fast action 1/4-1oz lures (NFC SJ706). I haven’t tried a 1/4oz but 3/8 to 3/4 works great. I easily get 100’ casts with 3/4oz jigs using the Shimano Bantam w/ 15lbs fluorocarbon.
