Gonna build two 14 weights for Bluefin tuna fishing on the west coast. Fish could be over 100 lbs. - gotta take what you can get. Blank is both "castable" and fish "fightable".
Starting with Fuji TKWTG. Typically I would transition into TKTTG (used to use TLSG) for running guides. Should I stick with double foot for running guides and continue with TKWTG and not concern myself as weight increase matters less than "extra security"? Are TLKWTG a better alternative for running guides if staying with double foot as they are lighter than TKWTG? I'm over thinking it and should just use TKTTG? Appreciate any insight/opinions. I have built dozens of these type rods. Typically used high frame double foot spinning guides for the first three guides off the real. Then drop down to low frame double foot casting guides. Keep in mind that you won’t be pulling any harder than what your leader and or tippet tests out at, regardless of how big the fishes.
For the double foot casting guides, I always used the TNSG model. But I do not believe those are made anymore. Hopefully there is something at least similar. ……. Re: 14 WT for Tuna - Guide Selection

Thanks Tom. I'd say more often then not Fluro/mono 60 or 80 lbs. will be leader.
In terms of guides, like you I was thinking 1st three although not sure they qualify as 'high frame" - TKWTG 20 (28.6mm), 16 (21.2mm) and 10 (14.6mm). Then size 8 running guides. The N frame 8 was 12 mm in height. The TKWTG 8 is 12.3 mm and the newer and lighter TLKWTG 8 is 12mm - lighter but don't know much about these so makes me nervous for tuna. The NSG were plenty beefy enough for this type rod. The TLKWTG has, I think, a much thinner and lighter frame. I doubt you can put more than about 20lbs of pull on the rod, which is a lot, so they might be okay. I just haven't used that particular frame so I might be tempted to stay with the TKWTG.
I think your choice of sizes is fine. Pretty much what I used. ............ Re: 14 WT for Tuna - Guide Selection

Thank you. Think I'll stick with the TKWTG to be safe. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
