I know this has been somewhat addressed a few years ago but am bringing it up again.
I don't do this very ofter but a high schooler broke a high end rod I built him. I am salvaging the top to make a 40" Walleye ice rod for outside a house (a run-N-gun rod). Since the rod had micro guides on it I had to sand it smooth taking the paint off. I plan to paint it then clear it. What do I use for the clear? Spray can would be preferable. I'm sure I need something with UV protectant in it. Thanks for the help! Marcus Marcus McCleery Re: Clear coating entire rod???

Permagloss is liklely the best and most efficient way to go. You can get it painted but that is considerably more money and time. Re: Clear coating entire rod???

Marcus,
The simplest thing to do, is to remove the finish down to the fiberglass or graphite. Use 1200 wet and dry sand paper, used wet for the final finish. Then, after putting on the guides, wrapping and finish, then just put on a coat of hard wax on the parts of the rod that don't have thread, guides, or finish. Then, po9lish the wax and you will be set. It is never necessary to paint fiberglass or graphite - unless you want to, and add stiffness and extra weight to the blank. G Loomis used on finish on many of their rods over the years. With no finish, or paint there is nothing to chip or scratch, or being heavier than is necessary.
