Tape on permagloss
Posted by: Ryan Edamatsu (---)

I used some blue painters tape on a rod that was coated in permagloss. When peeling off the tape, some of the permagloss coating came off with it. Now the rod have some bald patches where there used to be a coat. I am certain the permagloss has dried completely, I coated it many weeks ago. Does anyone have the same issues? I thought permagloss was supposed to be a strong, durable clear coat. It does have good recommendations and reviews on this site.

I can't imagine lifting cured PermaGloss with painter's tape. Are you certain your surface preparation was proper? Did you prepare a "water break free" surface condition?

Now that I think about it, I don't recall doing any of that. That may be the issue.

Wipe the blank with alcohol then run a fine grey scotchbrite pad over it tip to butt. Then coat with the PG. That's the proper sequence.

Did the tape only pull off the PG or did the tape pull off the PG and part of the original blank finish.

If part of the finish came off with the PG, the bond suffered a substrate failure. The fix would be to inspect and remove any questionable finish as part of the surface prep process and follow the directions of the manufacturer.

Have fun
