I want to build a few 6 foot casting rods...how long is a standard non-pistol grip? I'd like to have a cork pistol grip but they are much to expensive...
Thank you Re: Rod Grip Question

Grips can be any length you want them. I really like the design and length that St Croix used for so long, about 3 1/2-3 3/4 inches I believe, and slight tape from the rear to the front.
This one works well for me, too: [northforkcomposites.com] Re: Rod Grip Question

For bass casting rods, I've built anywhere from a 7" "handle" (length from butt cap to bottom of reel seat) for a purpose built kayak rod used while seated and for making short casts to an 11" handle for a chatterbait/deep crank rod intended to be used standing and making very long casts. Most of my rods are 9-10" The 7" full cork grips are about as close as you'll come to a pistol grip without actually buying a pistol grip. [mudhole.com] Re: Rod Grip Question

I just built a casting rod with an 11 inch rear grip and it could’ve been 9” I generally try to keep the rear grip as short as possible Re: Rod Grip Question

My 6 ft. casting straight grips are 6 inches long. Now days I think 7 inch is much easier to find and, in many materials, I don't think would make a tinker's bit of difference. Re: Rod Grip Question

My earlier response, favoring the old St Croix shape and size, was based on the assumption that the rod would be split grip. Probably not a good assumption. Re: Rod Grip Question

I just put a short straight cork handle on thinking that cork pistol grips were not available anymore. There are so many long rods now where people want a two handed handle. I’d like to know about the cork pistol grips you’re talking about? Where can one buy those I may be willing to stomach the cost? Re: Rod Grip Question

You can still find pistol grips I put one on a 6’ casting rod about two month ago, and the price has gone up since I bought it.
