Grinding Fuji guide foots

I heard recently that you are not supposed to grind the guide feet on Fujis, as this will mess up the anti corrosion coating on them. This supposedly includes BC grey amd CC silver coatings. Do anyone knows if this is true? And is grinding them necessary?

Ryan
IMO - grinding feet of any coated (chromed) guide will eliminate the anticorrosion properties of the coating.
That being said - the coating will not protect from staining for its lifetime if used in saltwater and not cleaned properly.
The issue I had with grinding Fuji feet is that the heat generated will cause the weld to fail.
I only prep by hand using an EZE Lap diamond "file"

And - YES - again, IMO - prepping is necessary to get a nice smooth ramp.

Will the epoxy form an airtight seal protecting the foot from contamination and corrosion?

Michael, while the "airtight seal" might prevent corrosion of the foot, if the rod is not properly cleaned after salt exposure the guides (exc possibly titanium alloy guides) will fail outside the seal, so it is sort of a moot point. Rods have to be cleaned properly.

I use Fuji guides exclusively and do not grind the feet of any of them. A light brush with sandpaper gives the foot a little "bite" helping the thread climb the foot. I expect that is what Herb accomplishes with his EZE Lap file.

I’m on board for cleaning all equipment after saltwater fishing, I clean everything I used that day with freshwater.

I was asking if epoxy seals the exposed metal on the foot protecting it from corrosion. So if he sanded it and removed the protective coating it shouldn’t matter as long as the exposed area is sealed.

Personally I don’t sand my guides, I’m not that particular.

Michael
After the rod's flexing many times - there is no such thing as sealed.
I also olny use Ti or NiTi aloy such as REC Components,

Personally I don’t grind the feet on Fuji guides, or any guide for that matter. I find grinding unnecessary and it also removes the protective corrosion control finish. If you have a problem climbing the toe of the larger guides, then just roughen it up a little with diamond nail file. This will give the thread a little more bite to climb the toe without removing the finish. Just my way of doing it, many other prefer grinding the foot of every guide they wrap. It basically up to you.
