Hi!
I have recently bought a flyrod that was made with Bastson 6’ 6’’ RX 6 Inshore Popping Multipurpose SP781-2CG blanks. I did not know that the blanks were attended for a spinner rod when I bought it, and it was being advertised as a 3wt small stream flyrod at the fly shop I bought it at. Would this work for that application or would I be better off using a different fly line or just return the rod? Christian Re: Bastson 6’ 6’’ RX 6 Inshore Popping Multipurpose SP781-2CG

I think it will be hard to predict how it will work. It’s moderate in action, which will help. The specs make me think more 4-5 weight, but crosswalk information between spinning rod power and fly rod weights is rare and inconsistent. Its maximum lure weight rating is 1/4. If it really handles that well, it might night load properly with three weight line in such a short length. Re: Bastson 6’ 6’’ RX 6 Inshore Popping Multipurpose SP781-2CG

Christian,
I have built on that blank before. I built it up as a spinning rod and it really makes a very good spinning rod when used as live bait rod. The designation as a popping rod indicates that the tip part of the rod is extremely light and excels in notifying the fisher person when a light biting fish is at the end of the line - bothering the bait. Compared to a typical fly rod, I would say that the action is a bit fast. i.e. the bulk of the action when fishing is on the upper 1/2 of the rod. A comparable fly rod will tend to bend nearly all of the way to the butt of the rod. If I were you, I would build it up as a spinning rod and use it for that - when the wind is blowing too hard for excellent fly fishing. Then, purchase the appropriate blank and build it up as a fly rod for the fish that you are catching. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
