Creating a Convex Curve on the End of a Fighting Butt

How does one make a fighting butt so the rubberized cork ring on the rear of the butt is convex (bulging outward)?
I have seen butts available for purchase that are slightly convex and some that look as if someone cut a ball in half and glued it on. How can I get this result using sandpaper and a straight edge? Do I need another tool? Thank you in advance. Tony Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/16/2023 05:37PM by Tony Scott. Re: Creating a Convex Curve on the End of a Fighting Butt

There was an article in RodMaker magazine about that some years ago, also how to cut EVA balls bought at the craft store to use on the end. Maybe I can find it. Volume 15 Issue 5. Edited 1 time(s). Pretty simple if you have a lathe or a similar device to spin an object.
Start with a thick walled butt cap or eva. Create a mandrel on the end of a potential holder for the cap by simply adding layers of masking tape on the object that you have inserted into the chuck. In past times, I have used 1/2 inch steel, 5/8th steel or solid fiberglass blank material. If the end of your rod butt is even larger, perhaps a piece of 3/4 or 1 inch material is appropriate. Once you have the mandrel created, simply slip your material over the mandrel, turn on the lathe or the motorized shaft and go to work with sand paper. Start with coarse sand paper and as you near your target size and shape go to progressively finer and finer paper until you are finished. Then, once you are satisfied, mark a line on the object and use a 3 cornered file to cut it off or carefully use a sharp blade to cut the cap off at the appropriate location and go ahead and glue it onto the butt of your rod.
