Perfect Ghost / Invisible Wraps
Posted by: Mark Talmo (---)

While Ghost or Invisible Wraps may certainly not be the norm for most, some of that may have to do with unsatisfactory results from previous attempts resulting in wraps that did not live up to their name, invisible. After my first attempt, which proved to be quite disappointing, I sought advice from the knowledgeable members of this site; I am so glad and thankful that I did! I cannot remember the names of those who assisted, but thank you so much; you know who you are!!!
Other than Pearsals Glossimer silk thread which is no longer (at least readily) available, the majority suggested Hitena silk, natural color. To say there was a night-and-day difference from my first attempt would be the understatement of the year! Combined with the ultra thin viscosity of CTS Crystal Coat finish epoxy, the result is as clear as clear can be = truly INVISIBLE! The very fine grain figure of the bamboo fly rod that I am helping my son rebuild is just as visible / crisp looking through the thread wrap as if looking directly at the blank = unbelievably so!
Although the Hitena silk thread may possibly be the greatest factor to the wrap’s invisibility, I am convinced that the CTS Crystal Coat plays a substantial role as well. I am always careful to “fill the tunnels” along the sides of guide feet, yet my first Ghost Wrap attempt with a different epoxy left noticeable air pockets within the tunnels = unsatisfactory. After our guide was wrapped with the Hitena silk thread, a sizable drop of Crystal Coat was applied to just the tip of the guide foot. Almost immediately, the drop started to diminish as the finish was wicked through and under the wrap and alongside the guide foot and toward the open end; no working, manipulating = it did it automatically. Not so with my first attempt using DIFFERENT thread and finish. Obviously, more finish was applied to saturate the rest of the wrap.
The end result is much better than expected; how could anyone expect more than perfection? I cannot imagine any other materials or methods producing better results! Whether you do Ghost Wraps on a regular basis or would like to try it, Hitena silk thread combined with CTS Crystal Coat finish is a DEFINITE WINNER!!!
Thank you to Gabriel at Hitena and Herb at CTS for outstanding products!!! Of course, although I was already familiar with and a proponent of CTS Crystal Coat, thank you also to those of you who suggested Hitena silk thread!!!
