If you actually watch a double-haul caster for a while I think you will notice he or she will haul the line on every cast, short as well as long - but obviously more gently in a short cast. I'm not sure why this is so, other than it just "feels right". It also greatly reduces stress in the casting arm, which is a considerable benefit to older fly casters such as I am. As for not providing numerical measurements, I can still cast a full fly line 90' (which I seldom need to do). But I can also cast a fly line 60' into a headwind, which I often need to do. I believe that learning to double-haul is a valuable skill for any fly fisher who frequently wants to cast more than 30', or who wishes to greatly reduce stress on his/her casting arm and shoulder. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

If one hauls correctly the first time, one does not need to double haul.

Simple math tells us that these double-haul casters have a mere 50% success rate in fly casting.

Typically if you can cover more water you can catch more fish. Whatever it takes to cast farther when needed is what will work. Double hauling can achieve this for most people. Fishing in narrow rivers and streams it is not necessary. learning to roll cast and other river fly fishing techniques is though. The correct method for the type of water conditions. If it gives you more confidence, buy the $1,000 rod, it may make you happy, broke or both. It will be zen-like experience when your wife figures out how much money you spent on fishing. Zen she will kick your a*#$@.

Kind of like "Fast Action" it sounds cool, and has its place, but often oversold and not ideal for a lot of applications.
