Thread color change indoors to outdoors

New to the forum and to rod building. Current build using Prowrap colorfast #862 twilight black size A on chrome snake guides. Guide foot wraps are 14mm long with 2mm trim bands in metallic red. All wraps look black under shop lights, but in full sun some wraps have a blue tint. All wraps are from the same spool. Blank is Sage 3110-4 in conifer. The color shift is never in the same wrap, but in separate wraps down the blank. The effect is as if the thread changed color on this one spool. Discovered the mistake after first layer of epoxy applied. Getting nauseous anticipating epoxy removal on a $500 blank! Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

You might add black pigment to 2nd coat of finish before coating. Blackest black is regular nylon and no cp. Black pigment can't hurt. NCP black is useless. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

Larry,
Black thread on green blank - sounds to me that you didn't pack well and the green is showing through the thread wraps. Herb Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

When usingg black thread, there is no reason to use a colorfast or NCP thread. NCP thread is not as vibrant as regular nylon. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

In color theory 101 we were told there are very few "true' blacks. Truly. there are not. All the rest are actually deep, deep blue or red. So, if you did not pack well or maybe the thread tension was a bit much it could happen. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

A coat of high-gloss black paint might solve two problems: the thread wraps would be (very close to) true black and with just one coating and reducing unwanted, leveraged, added rod weight which multiple coats of finish produce. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

Larry,
You don't have a problem. You simply have a wonderful rod that has black wrapped thread in low light and a dark slightly blue thread in sun light. If you are building for yourself, enjoy it. If building for a client, show them the finished rod and ask the client if any changes need to be made. It sounds like it is a wonderful rod and will create a lot of happy times for the person using the rod. Take care Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

In any event, I would NOT remove the thread from a $500 blank.
If you remove the finish and thread, you are almost certainly going to remove the finish from the rod blank - Don't do it. Best wishes. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

Mix black pigment in the 2nd coat and try it . If you still don't like it, then tear it off and rewrap with black nylon and no CP. You can stop the coat short of the trim wraps, and coat them with clear finish. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

Take comfort that while you are fishing with and transporting this rod nobody else will notice the slight loss in the blackness of your guide wraps. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

Thanks for all the responses. I'm afraid I pushed the panic button prematurely! This short term memory loss is a problem. I started this wrap in my brother-in-laws shop and didn't finish all wraps. Brought blanks home and completed wrap. He uses Fuji exclusively. Mixing thread brands....total rookie mistake! But black is black right? Moving forward I will pay more attention to thread tension, packing, and switch to nylon (seems more vibrant). As my brother-in-law says "It will fish well and look great on cloudy days". Many thanks again for all your input. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

Guys.....he has a red trim band that will preclude him tinting the second coat with black. Re: Thread color change indoors to outdoors

Of course not.
The trim band will just end up a few shads darker red. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
