Thanks Roger, that $10 motor looks like it might be the ticket for me. I'll pick one of them and some pvc up, I already built some stands out of ash.

Makes no sense to me. So if you go by a time schedule and say you are on for a turn every five minutes at the start, but at 3 minutes you see the finish has run to the bottom and is starting to sag and drip off the rod you are going to wait another two minutes before you turn it? By that time you will have real problems. Put me in the “turn it when needed” crowd.

You can also put me in the “buy a dryer” crowd as well. At some point you will want one.

Another option is to use a dc gear motor and a variable voltage power supply. This option will let you dial in the speed of your motor for perfect dryer speed as follows:

Note:
These 30mm gear motors have an output shaft that is 6mm in size. So, consider that when obtaining a shaft adapter to go from the motor shaft to the chuck that you are going to use.

Jim, I just watched the video and that is really interesting. I don't know how I feel about it even after seeing results, but I don't know all that much about rod building. I'll look around the web to find some firsthand reports.

Tom. I’ve been rod building for 40 years and on this forum for a lot of years. I’ve seen many times stated on here regarding getting a good finish on your wraps that not everyone does it the same way. Find what works for you. Now your making it sound like the way you do it is the right way and the only way it should be done. I do a lot of repair work. Sometimes 4 or5 rods with one guide wrap each. I don’t sit there for 2 hours looking a rods. I do other things and turn them when the timer goes off. I use a thin coat of finish. If the finish is dripping off the rod in a couple of minutes you put too much finish on it.
